[PROPOSAL] I think I found our new 2C

He's not second line center quality at all anymore. Swapping Höglander for him makes us worse.

Höglander is currently playing on the 4th line. He is not a favourite of Tocchet. I don’t see him as a top 6 option moving forward. Podkolzin will be ahead of him real soon.

Not sure what you are expecting to get in a Höglander trade. His value is not real high. A resigned Wennberg would be good value. Worst case is he is our 3C next season.

Wennberg is a cheap option to try and fill the 2C position while the Lotto Line is doing its thing. Wennberg is sound defensively and could maybe produce some more points playing with Kuzmenko. Wennberg is known as a set up man and is a great skater. Worst case is he helps us defensively.

If you want a slam dunk 2C like Elias Lindholm then be prepared to trade your 2024 1st plus Höglander plus Podkolzin.

Oh, I'm not saying there's an easy fix to our situation, but I don't think Wennberg is going to solve anything.  Honestly, when you think about it... that Joshua-Blueger-Garland line has been playing well enough to be our 2nd line for now.  Every game they score a goal - what more can you ask from them?  It's an okay situation for now.

Isn't he on IR ?

Just checked, ya.

If it’s a short term injury, I would look into a trade.

Puts up good numbers, wins face-offs, but I have no idea how his defensive game is? 3.75 million cap as well.

So with the Lotto Line back together again and Petey and Miller playing unreal together, it looks like we may be better off trying to acquire another centre versus a winger.  The new centre would need to play with Kuzmenko and Mikheyev, so it would have to be someone who is very good defensively and can also produce some offence.  A set up man for Kuzmenko would be ideal.  I was throwing around Buchnevich, but honestly he is not really a centre, he’s primarily a winger.

So in comes my next choice and someone that probably can be had for a lot cheaper than Buchnevich…

To Vancouver:

Alexander Wennberg (50% retention)

To Seattle:

Nils Höglander

Vancouver does this because if we are keeping the Lotto Line together then we need a 2C.  Wennberg may not really be a 2C but he is an upgrade on Suter and I think given better linemates he can produce more offensively.  He is a good set up man and is a fast skater so I think he would work well with Kuzmenko.  Höglander is pretty much redundant on our team now and is a 4th liner for us but could be a 20 goal scorer on another team in the top 6.  This is why Seattle does the deal.  They get a young cost controlled winger who could break out while trading a pending UFA.

Also, Wennberg is Swedish so he probably signs an extension to play in Vancouver.  He wouldn’t break the bank either and is still only 29 years old, so he can play with us for a few more years and even be a 4C in the future as he gets older.  He is fast, very good defensively and will also help our penalty kill.

Höglander still has potential but he is not a Tocchet guy and we have lots of other wingers coming up in the pipeline to replace him…

Pettersson    Miller           Boeser

Kuzmenko    Wennberg    Mikheyev

Joshua         Blueger        Garland

Podkolzin     Suter            Lafferty

Aman

I can see Podkolzin coming up for the playoffs and playing on the 4th line….

Aw Petey! You giving up on yourself already? :classic_biggrin:

Miller played C. But was thrown out of what seemed like every faceoff.  Petey is only a C when talking contract for some reason.

Miller won 12 faceoffs and lost 10

Petey won 1 face off and lost 2.

At this point, Canucks are only looking for guys who will put us deeper into the playoffs. I don't think this does it.

We need:

- More structured 4th line, speed and size

- Have heard they want 1 more top 6, but not sure we really need that, but if it is someone like Jake Guentzel (rumored but not substantiated), I could see them doing something like Kuzmenko for Guentzel.

- More defensive depth.

Earlier in the season, I didn't think we were set for this to be our year. I'm still on the fence on that, but I'm starting to lean more to the possibility that this could be our year. Zadorov made a difference, largely in that we didn't give up anything substantial to get him. Beauvillier to Chicago was done at below what should have been market value, but getting Zadorov in exchange for a 3rd and a 5th that we picked up by moving someone who was not properly being utilized moved the needle on us.

If we can get a little deeper in defense and better size on 4th line, we're close to making a serious run.

The idea that we might be able to strengthen those positions and still have depth for a cup run....we're in a unique position.

Aman

Hoglander

Juulsen

Di Giuseppe

Irwin

Podkolzin

Raty

Sasson

Bains

Karlsson

McWard

McDonough

Hirose

Silovs

Those are all supporting cast who have either already shown that they can survive in the NHL or are showing that they are ready for that test.

We've got better depth than we've had in a LONG time!
