DexM94 Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 (edited) Rumors everywhere, but lets say there is fire under the smoke. IF the choice ends up between Monahan and Jenner, which one do you prefer for the 2C duty ? Sean Monahan 29, 2M (with bonus) UFA. 43 11-14-25 (av 0.58ppg) 57.7% FO Boone Jenner 30, 3.75M for 3 years. 29G 13-5-18pts (av 0.62 ppg) 55.9% FO and who are you ready to throw into a deal to make it work (cap wise and mutual interest) ? Miss Korea Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 This doesn't even come close. It's Jenner. Quite literally an all-star. Bona fide leader and captain of his team. Is a first-line man on his team. No disrespect to Monahan, but one choice is significantly better. If both are indeed traded, the difference in quality will be apparent when you see the hauls they return. 1 1 Quote
Mac Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 monahan - he is not as good as jenner but would be significantly cheaper Quote
DownUndaCanuck Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Monahan is a lot cheaper and I kind of wanted him for our 3C in the off-season, but Jenner is the better player and would make a great 2nd or 3rd line defensive center, he's bigger and stronger and much more of a character guy so you know he'd be good in the playoffs. Surely it starts with a young roster player (Hoglander, Kuzmenko) + 1st. I'd do Kuz + 1st easy for Jenner. Throw them a defensive prospect if they want as well but that's probably a bit much. Best thing is when we split up the Lotto line we've got incredible depth to challenge Vegas. When we don't... Quote
DrJockitch Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Monahan is only 29!? Seems like he has been around and injured forever. Would have believed it if said was 39. I wouldn't target either though of the 2 Jenner because I guess he lines up with the JTM part of our current age window. A first with a just recovering prospect pool would be too much but this is somewhat mitigated since it will be the 32nd pick in the draft! 1 Quote
Nucker67 Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 I don't think either of these guys is the answer. 1 Quote
Reznor Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Jenner gets my vote. Monahan has struggled the last few seasons. He hasn't played full years, and even if he did, he is well behind the kind of stats he has displayed in the past. Seems like damaged goods - quite literally - and a risk. But he's cheap. He's also UFA, so this to me would most likely be a pure rental, with better options in the offseason. Jenner is a harder guy to play against, and is frankly the kind of guy Tocchet covets. He's a really good 2-way player who I could see meshing well with Mik and a 3rd; a line that would be relied on defensively, but still put up secondary scoring. Obviously, the price would be a lot higher here. His cap hit is obviously more, but it is still actually very reasonable for a 2c. He also has 2 more years left on his contact after this season, so he's an ongoing solution. Quote

If Jenner costs Lekkerimaki and Monahan costs McDonough, I know which one I'd choose for THIS year... 1 1 Quote

If one player costs significantly less to acquire, doesn't that means he will be significantly... worse? You get what you pay for. Quote

I guess I'm not lol... what I'm saying is Jenner is clearly the superior player but would cost significantly more. For this particular season, if I were to choose between the 2, I'd be more willing to give up on a McDonough to get a Monahan, than give up on a Lekkerimaki for a Jenner. That's if I HAD to choose one of these 2. My choice would be neither. 1 Quote

To be honest I feel like Monahan is going to cost significantly more than a depth prospect just out of college, but let's just say for argument's sake these are the asking prices of both players. My original point stands. You can either buy the $12K car or the $6K car. You get what you pay for. If you try to be cheap, you'll end up with a cheap product. Quote

Just that I rather buy the $6k car in this situation lol Quote
JayDangles Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Neither Dylan Cozens is the guy we need as 2C. We need more Canadian grit, and he is exactly what the team needs at 2C. Especially during the playoffs. Quote

I saw that the asking price for monahan right now is a 1st round pick or a 2nd+ prospect Quote
Miss Korea Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 @Canuck You the vote so far is 38 for, 10 against. Quote
Sativika Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 I went with Boone, but I leaned towards option three as well. To me, whoever it is, we do have a need. Actually we've needs elsewhere but staying with 2nd line centres.... I like Boone Jenner better. He'd be a needle mover for us and though he's not in the 25-26yrs old range, he's not old either at 30. He's a heart'n'soul type guy with size and physicality in his game. A perfect RT player and would be a playoff beast. I know his downside is injury issues. But you take that chance. I've seen Joel Ericsson Ek mentioned quite a bit lately as another option. Seemingly a strong option at that. As far as I'm concerned, this is the guy to go after. Another RT type guy but younger than Boone. And a Swede! We like them Swedes. Also mentioned quite a bit is that JR/PA will do the right thing by the team. Not in these words, but you get it. To hear these words of encouragement waxes enthusiastic to the confidence we have in management. They have done well since arriving with little to no hiccups. Minor deals that didn't work; Kravtsov, Studnika, Lazaar, and...ahem.....Bruce there it is.............. Please. No rentals though. A tweek here and there without breaking the farm. That's all I ask.
