RWJC
Blackhawks, Islanders Swap 2024 First-Round Picks May 24th, 2024 at 12:24pm CST • By Josh Erickson The Blackhawks and Islanders are making an unusually early pick swap ahead of the 2024 draft. Chicago has acquired the Islanders’ first- and second-round picks (18th and 50th overall), while the Islanders receive the 20th overall selection (originally owned by the Lightning) and a pair of second-round picks (54th and 61st overall, previously acquired from the Kings and Canucks). More to come… https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/05/blackhawks-islanders-swap-2024-first-round-picks.html#ref=home Edited May 24 by RWJC
Warhippy
Interesting. one would think the Hawks would want more supplementary picks in the early rounds. They improve their positions slightly in the mid 1st and 2nd but give up an additional pick to do so. They must really have their eyes on someone in those rounds to make this trade.

24K
Such a random time to do pick swaps. Islander must have something cooking needing that extra 2nd. 1
PureQuickness
No more trading away picks for us. We need good prospects.

That doesn't make any sense though, cus how are they supposed to know this early who's going to be there at 18 but not 20? Unless they have some pretty specific intel on the two teams ahead of them. And even then, how do they know some other team before 18 wouldn't take the player they're after. 2
MeanSeanBean
feel like Islanders needs some extra picks for an upcoming move. Not sure why the Hawks make this trade though.
Wing
This is such a puzzling move for Hawks. Giving up a second rounder just to move up two spots in the first round and a few spots in the second round when they don't know who's available yet. I guess they have a lot of draft capital to spare. Great move by Lou.

Well, trading up 2 spots now also allows them to trade up addition spots for cheaper. Instead of having to trade 5 spots up for pick 15, they only need to trade 3 spots up, which might be more enticing for a trade partner as well (our guy might still be there if we move back only 3 spaces). flat land fish
If they move from 20 to 18 doesn't that just help them get in front of pick 19? They must think the team in front of them likes their target and that target is relatively off the board compared to most teams.
GrammaInTheTub
Islanders gaining the extra pick is to start setting up all the pieces to take a run at Marner
Bounce000
Interesting that they don’t wait to see how the draft is playing out before moving up 2 spots
EB43
Strange time for this.. this is the kind of trade that happens on the floor..
Reg
Wouldn't if one or both teams make further trades of these or other picks in order to improve their draft position.

RWJC
Morning Notes: Islanders, Paquette, Leonard May 27th, 2024 at 9:47am CST • By Josh Cybulski Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News writes that the New York Islanders’ recent trade of draft picks with the Chicago Blackhawks could be a prelude to a bigger move. Rosner wonders if the extra second-round draft pick the Islanders acquired might be used to clear salary cap space in a similar fashion to the trade the Islanders made last summer in which they traded Josh Bailey and his $5MM cap hit a second-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations. The Islanders have several contracts on the books that they would love to move to acquire additional help in the top 6, but most of those contracts would require a sweetener to facilitate a trade. The Islanders are slated to have just over $6MM in cap space available heading into the summer. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/05/morning-notes-islanders-paquette-leonard.html#ref=home
