[Proposal] Vancouver and Carolina (Mik & Kot)

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Read an article or two about the how Vancouver was "contemplating" buying out Mik. However said articles didn't reference a credible source or an insider that tends to be right a lot more than they were wrong. Somehow I don't think PA / JR would saddle the club with a cap hit of $1.15M, $1.15M, 1.55M, 1.55M over the next 4 years with OEL's bill coming due over the next 6 years ($2.35M, $4.77M, $4.77M, $2.13M, $2.13M, $2.14M).

To Car:
Mik (25% retained) plus a 3rd round pick

To Van

Kotkaniemi (50% retained), 2nd round pick

Why would Vancouver do it - unload Mik's contract frees up $652,000 cap hit this year and next at which point Mik's contract would drop off eliminating the $1,187,500 25% retained. Kotkaniemi comes in at a relatively "cheap" $2.91M contract for 6 years and still young. PA / JR would be betting on Kotkaniemi benefitting from Tocchet's system and increase his value over contract significantly.

Why Carolina would do it - unload a long term contract on a player they seem to have soured on but do not want to buy out. Perhaps Carolina involves a third team to pick up some of the cap hit to ease the retained cost.

Assuming the above is about what the ultimate deal would be, would you do it if Carolina came to you with this offer? Does either side need to add a bit more?

They're better off just buying Kotkaniemi out than retaining 50% on him, taking a csp dump back AND including a 2nd

So a third team involved and Vancouver would have to add a little bit ? Yes, the cap hit on Kot is under $1M for 12 years if bought out.

I was thinking something similar to @Rocket-68 but @qwijjibo is right. This proposed deal is not favorable enough to Carolina. They could almost certainly get a more favorable deal elsewhere.

I was thinking about a more complicated deal. Maybe Hronek goes the other way (with Mik) and the Canucks get Kot with maybe a small amount of retention (say 20%) to push the cap hit down to about 4 M instead of about 5 M along with something good like a first round pick and a player or prospect.

Not saying it is likely, but I think the Canucks should be looking at trades involving Hronek as his contract demands seem unreasonable and he gives off the vibe that he does not particularly want to be here. (Maybe he gave off the same vibe in Detroit and that was why they traded him. Maybe he wants to go to a sunny low-tax destination where housing is (relatively) cheap.

$8.8m over 12 years if bought out.

His current contract goes up in 3yrs to $5.20m in 3yrs, which totals out to $30m after 6.

He also has a M-NTC starting in 2025-26.

Not a great contract for the Hurricanes.

Mik for JK + Morrow.

Thats a fair trade.

Terrific.  Probably have to retain some of Mik's salary.

Love to acquire Morrow.

Play Kokt next year and see if he improves with the great coaching staff.

If not, try to trade him or buy him out before his N-MTC kicks in.

At best, Nucks trade him straight up for 4th rounder to a rebuilding team.

At it's worst, a buy out will cost $7.23 over 10 years.

Canucks still end up with cap savings from Mik's salary + Morrow.  No bad.

Mik and Hronek for JK + Necas + Morrow

id do that

to make things even more intriguing, we retain 1.25m on Mik (give Carolina extra cap space immediately)

Carolina retains 500k on JK (Carolina carries 500k for much longer)

if JK pans out that could be the steal of the century

This does trigger a thought though...

If the Canucks are actually considering buying out Mik, then it would make a LOT of sense to just retain the $1.2M on him for the final 2 years of his deal to make him much more tradeable.

Mikheyev at $3.5M AAV absolutely has value.  We could actually get something back for him... possibly a 3rd or 4th round pick.

The Canes definitely need a young first pairing right shot D. Hronek is one of the best out there.

Maybe Allvin has already talked to other clubs about Mik and that’s where the Mik for JK rumours come from?  Allvin knows he can move Mik so long as he takes a similar contract back and that’s the value?

Oooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrr .... now hear me out.

Mik has a M-NTC? Check - a 12 team no trade list (submitted)

Is Arizona on that list? Check - on every M-NTC list submitted across the league as a matter of fact

Is UTAH on that list? Che ... ahhh ... why no it isn't. Utah didn't exist when said list was submitted

PA (picking up phone): Hey UTAH?

UTAH: Yes??

PA: You guys have a shit-ton of Cap Space and will suck moose-balls over the next couple of years so here is what I am thinking, Mik plus a pick for future considerations and you bury him in Kunlun Red Star or whatever farm team you are drumming up.

UTAH: Need a sweetener.

PA: K, future considerations will be a 7th round pick if you win more than 10 games with him on the ice otherwise $1

UTAH: DONE!

As an added bonus: Bettman shits a brick but can't do squat.

EDIT: Once Mik lands in UTAH watch his M-NTC instantly evaporate allowing him to be traded anywhere, why even back to Vancouver on a retained salary basis. Additional bonus: Bettman rectum explodes.
