RWJC Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 NY Rangers Rumors: Is A Jacob Trouba Buyout On The Horizon? Dave Litman Sunday, June 02, 2024 After a disappointing finish to the conference finals for the New York Rangers, a lot of the buzz around Madison Square Garden (or at least, certainly among the fans and followers that frequent the arena), is that the Blueshirts need to seriously consider a buyout of captain Jacob Trouba. His 7-year, $8 million AAV contract is looking like an albatross, and with two years still to run, it's unlikely the team will be able to find a trade partner or get a satisfactory return, even with some retention. The calculations have been done by CapFriendly, and a buyout of Trouba would result in a $4 million cap hit over each of the next two seasons, and then $2 million in each of the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons. That just might be more palatable than paying $8 million for a second or even third-pairing d-man for two more years. After a 50-point season with the Winnipeg Jets in 2018-19, the Rangers inadvisably signed him to a seven-year, $56 million free agent deal. It immediately looked problematic, as his points total dropped by 50% in his first season in New York. He's never come close to rebounding to that 50-point level, though his 2021-22 campaign saw him post a plus/minus rating of +25 with a career-high 11 goals and 39 points. This season, however, more disappointment, as he continued to have trouble moving the puck out of his own zone, and also in preventing zone entries. He registered three goals and 22 points in 69 games with a -4 rating. He was a -3 in the last four games against the Florida Panthers which included three straight losses and elimination from the playoffs. On top of all that, Trouba has a 15-team no-trade clause this coming season, so even if they were to find a team somehow willing to take him on, it might not fly. A buyout just might be on the table. https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2024/06/ny-rangers-rumors-is-jacob-trouba.html 1 Quote

Drakrami Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 IF Trouba does get bought out. We convince Trouba to take a 2mil AAV cup contract. We run with Hughes/Trouba pairing, trade Hronek and use the capsavings to get 2 top 6 wingers. That'd be nice. 3 1 Quote

Give him the OEL contract and let him rebound, and we'd have a better partner fit-wise. Trade Hronek for a power winger (e.g. Crouse+ or B. Tkachuk) and ship out Mikheyev with a pick to fill out the rest of the roster and we should be better equipped for the playoffs. cripplereh Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Well if we could sweet talk him after the buyout and trade Hronek. We could then make a good back end. Quote

The buyout is the same as retaining 50%. Except they don't get the extra two years of 2mil in dead cap. Edit: Nevermind, sounds like buying him out is pure speculation. flickyoursedin Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 This guy would be a right handed Zadarov! If he’s bought out I’d love to bring him here. Guy plays 21+ minutes a night! Not worth his average but honestly at 4 mill this guy would be great! Quote
MeanSeanBean Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 Without thinking too hard about it, I'd take a flyer on him if the price was right. Quote

Hughes Trouba Zadorov Hronek Soucy Myers Yup, these are the situations we need to take advantage of. Trouba isn't a bad defenceman at all. He's just overpaid on his current contract. Sign him for what he's worth, and you have a legit top 4 RHD that would take a lot of heat off of Hronek. Quote

Rather them buying him out, we could trade for him at 50% retained for a B prospect. Hirosi, McWard, Woo I'd take a flyer, at least. Quote
Provost Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 Ya, this doesn’t make any sense… Lots of teams would take him with a little retention and even give them a return. Hoglander a prospect and a 3rd for Trouba ($3 million retained) and Kakko Rangers get cap relief and a scoring winger. We can then move Hronek’s rights and get a top six winger. Quote
