Gurn Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Watched John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight", and for the 3rd time in the show's history the main story was about India, the upcoming election, and Modi's move to religious persecution. Throw in some severe restrictions to the free press, the trend to literally bulldoze down the opposition. scary stuff as a country of 1.4 billion people link to a story about some of the history of trouble between Hindu and Muslim https://gnnhd.tv/news/35670/operation-blue-star-state-sponsored-terrorism-against-sikhs-in-india Global ranking of press freedom down to 161 of 180 countries on the list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_the_press_in_India#:~:text=In India%2C media bias or misleading information is,applicable to all substantive aspects of criminal law. cnn and bbc links regarding press freedoms, etc. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/22/media/india-elections-press-freedom-decline-intl-hnk/index.html https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-55906345 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Huge population, sliding into the far right, totalitarian type control, bad, bad, news for the rest of the world. 1 1 Quote

And so far he has, gotten away with it. One of the links I posted does mention that as Modi continues his oppression, he is actually creating more support for an independent "Khalistan'. Creating or increasing a problem, in order to secure his own gains of power. Then say "I'm the only one that fix this; vote for me". effective, but repulsive, tactic. 1 3 1 Quote

The overwhelming majority of Indians still struggle to make ends meet. And to equate economic growth with improved overall standard of living is false equivalency. Tell the folks living pay cheque to pay cheque that the good news is the stock market is steadily on the rise and they'll tell you that so far they haven't seen much improvement in their lives. 1 1 Quote

I disagreed with the Khalistan movement as recently as last year due to my opposition to theocracies. I have definitely reconsidered. Quote
Gurn Posted June 3 Author Posted June 3 India GDP is up- so say figures released by the Modi government? John Oliver- and the team of lawyers at HBO say 'b.s.' Quote
Wilbur Posted June 3 Posted June 3 GDP is like +/-, in certain contexts it can be somewhat meaningful. Personally, I can't get past that, by doing my own housework, and not paying someone else to do it, I am limiting GDP growth. 1 Quote

We should all go back to trading Tulips back and forth, like the Dutch of yesteryear. Makes about as much sense as this 'money stuff', and gets people out in the sunlight, doing yard work. 1 Quote

Duodenum Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Looks like Modi will win, but his party will hold far fewer seats than last time. Strong opposition this time. 1 Quote

Fun fact, India is home to the 3rd largest population of Muslims in the world even though they are a massive minority within India's borders. Another fun, fact Modi seriously under performed in last week's elections and now has to share power. So unlike what Mr Bolt claimed above most people are in fact not happy with what he's doing. 1 1 1 Quote
Satchmo Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I understand that just the part of the show that discusses India is available at either of the links below. Oliver created these websites because he was sure his show would be banned India. It was. The links do not work for me. I think they would work with a vpn set to India. I don't have vpn right now so I can't test that theory. https://www.howtoeatmangoes.com/ https://www.oppositesnakes.com/ I saw the show. Many Muslim Indians have been treated horribly. BTW - Modi did not get the expected majority in the election and will have to govern as part of a coalition. 1 Quote

India was and has always been a tolerant nation with Hindus/Muslims/Sikhs/Jains/Christians/Buddhists living side by side in the North/South/East/West for centuries. Modi has stirred a hornets nest that will leave India decimated going forward, because one guy wants total power. Again, a totalitarian, a Despot. 1 1 Quote
