Watched John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight", and for the 3rd time in the show's history the main story was about India, the upcoming election, and Modi's move to religious persecution. Throw in some severe restrictions to the free press, the trend to literally bulldoze down the opposition.

One of the links I posted does mention that as Modi continues his oppression, he is actually creating more support for an independent "Khalistan'.

Creating  or increasing a problem, in order to secure his own gains of power.

The only ones benefitting from "doing better" are the ones who already have money. The overwhelming majority of Indians still struggle to make ends meet. And to equate economic growth with improved overall standard of living is false equivalency. Tell the folks living pay cheque to pay cheque that the good news is the stock market is steadily on the rise and they'll tell you that so far they haven't seen much improvement in their lives.

I disagreed with the Khalistan movement as recently as last year due to my opposition to theocracies.  I have definitely reconsidered.

GDP is like +/-, in certain contexts it can be somewhat meaningful.  Personally, I can't get past that, by doing my own housework, and not paying someone else to do it, I am limiting GDP growth.

India is 80% Hindu so everyone else is a minority. Fun fact, India is home to the 3rd largest population of Muslims in the world even though they are a massive minority within India's borders.

 

Another fun, fact Modi seriously under performed in last week's elections and now has to share power. So unlike what Mr Bolt claimed above most people are in fact not happy with what he's doing.

I understand that just the part of the show that discusses India is available at either of the links below.  Oliver created these websites because he was sure his show would be banned India. It was. The links do not work for me.  I think they would work with a vpn set to India.  I don't have vpn right now so I can't test that theory.
