Report: Carolina Hurricanes working on long-term extension for Jaccob Slavin

Shane Seney Wednesday, June 12, 2024

While the Carolina Hurricanes are going to have a significant turnover on their roster heading into next season, it sounds like one of their pillars will be sticking around long term.

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Hurricanes and Slavin's camp have begun working on a long-term contract extension. Slavin has one season left on his current deal and is eligible to sign an extension on July 1.

A former fourth-round pick, Slavin collected 37 points in 81 games during the regular season and averages over 20 minutes a night. He's one of the Hurricanes best two-way options on the blueline and has impact in all situations.

Slavin is entering the final season of a seven-year $37.1 million contract and will likely come in just over the $5.3 million he's making annually on his current deal. The Hurricanes are projected to have $26.8 million in cap space to work with and have just hired Eric Tulsky as their full-time GM.

The Hurricanes are likely losing Brett Pesce, Teuvo Teravainen and Jake Guentzel to free agency and also have the contract of Seth Jarvis to worry about this summer. It's going to be a very busy offseason for Tulsky and company.

makes the Hronek deal look quite fair, imo.

Absolutely, and it is. Hanifin is the most recent comparable for Hronek, despite being an LD, and he got 8x7.35M

Before people freak out... remember Hronek is 26yo... 4 to 5 year difference is very significant here.

For sure, that's why going long-term with Hronek is much less of an issue.

Yeah signing slavin at age 31 to a 8 year deal is the definition of risky.
