WTF is a RedBlacks?

Admittedly I’m not a football fan, but I did attend the 99th Grey Cup and watched pretty much every Grey Cup since I was a kid.

 

Just now, while watching sportsnet they gave the score of the RedBlacks game and I was like WTF is a RedBlacks, thought  maybe Ottawa changed their name since rough riders may seem sexually demeaning so I googled it.

 

Much to my surprise they’ve been around since 2014 so I went a whole decade without knowing they exist, crazy.

Team Name, Colours and Logo

After inviting suggestions from the public, the owners chose Ottawa Redblacks (in French, Rouge et Noir d’Ottawa) as the team’s name. The name refers to the team’s uniform colours of red, black, and white, which honour those of the earlier Ottawa Rough Riders and Renegades. The Redblacks logo is a saw blade, recalling Ottawa’s history as a lumber town.

Obviously patterned off of the concept of le Rouge et Or (Laval). Oh and look, it translates nicely to French. Not an inspiring name but inoffensive.
