Unsigned RFA / Dman Philip Broberg Oilers

Broberg remains an unsigned after receiving a qualifying offer as an RFA in Edmonton.

The Oilers are presently 2.5m over Cap ,  with many players to sign / extend ..

and without a GM .

 

We saw glimpses of Broberg in the playoffs,

and this 23 yrs , 6’3  200lbs , LD, could be a very interesting player to pursue.


The Canucks have 2.5 available in Cap I beleive?  (Poolman LTIR)

 

 

Broberg s agent was reported as saying he was unhappy in Edmonton in Dec 2023 .

All I’m seeing on Cap Friendly :

RFA no arbitration rights because he needs an extra year of pro.

European transfer clause only lasted for 2 of his last 3 year ELC.

 

Is there a date that makes him a UFA?

I see 874+ on capfriendly (I thought it's supposed to be shut down - maybe it caught the CDC bug?)

Canucks do not have a 3rd round pick next year

In theory, we could fuck around with Deadmonton's cap by convincing him to sign a $1,511,700 contract - but then we'd have to decide who additionally would need to be sent down if we successfully get him (because we're already over the roster headcount limit if you add Silovs or any other backup goaltender).

 

edit, forgot to mention that it'd be too much of a gamble (too much of an unknown) to be throwing $2.3mil at him, and we don't have the cap space for it anyways :classic_tongue:

so he qualifies at 875 k ,  we do not need to compensate,  that’s what I see?

 

Offering 1.5 would put Edmonton in a “match “ or lose him scenario ??

Broberg was qualified.  However, he still needs to negotiate a new contract as an RFA.  Edmonton retained his rights as an RFA by qualifying him.  I think you are confused Sam that you think because he was qualified that he has to accept that contract.  Qualifying only means that Edmonton gets to keep his rights while they offer him a new contract.  He doesn't have arbitration rights, but he can be offer sheeted just like Silovs...

 

  • Teams must extend a qualifying offer to a restricted free agent to retain negotiation rights.
    • A qualifying offer is an official Standard Player Contract (SPC) offer which shall be 1 year in length, and which can be subject to salary arbitration should the player be eligible.
    • Clubs have until the later of June 25th or the first Monday after the Entry Draft to submit Qualifying Offers. For 2023, the deadline is June 30th at 5pm ET.
    • Qualifying Offers apply to Group 2 and Group 4 free agents.
    • Submitting a Qualifying Offers gives the prior club the right of first refusal to match any offer sheet submitted, or receive draft pick compensation.
    • If the player rejects the qualifying offer, they remain an RFA and their rights are retained by the team.
    • If a player does not receive a qualifying offer, the player becomes a UFA.

for futures somewhere ,.  And we have room ??

This type of scenario, is likely why the league has a 10% over the cap wiggle room, during the off season.

gives Edmonton time to sign players, and then trade down to the starting roster./cap.

We have $2.5 million in cap space with LTIR.  If we replace Freidman who we can waive with Broberg, then we could technically offer sheet Broberg up to $3.2 million.  Compensation would be a 2nd round pick next season.  I would definitely do it, however we run the risk of someone doing the same thing to Silovs, and then we'd be screwed...

Yes.  Remember, Silovs is in the same position, so I doubt Vancouver does an offer sheet on anyone...
