Elias Pettersson
Oilers Defender Could Be Offer Sheet Target (msn.com) Oilers Defender Could Be Offer Sheet Target EDMONTON -- Young inexpensive talent can be hard to come by. This wasn't the case for the Edmonton Oilers this past season. While both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg earned a roster spot during the last stretch of regular season games, they both had a rocky season. That all went away during the playoffs. Holloway recorded seven points in 25 games. He threw the second most hits (86) which was only one hit less than the top hitter, Sam Bennett. Holloway made his presence felt every time he hopped on the ice. Broberg didn't play as much as Holloway in the playoffs. An argument could be made that he was more impactful. Broberg didn't see game action until Game four of the Western Conference final against the Dallas Stars. He never looked out of place in the 10 games he played. His ice time for each of the Stanley Cup Final games were; 17:55, 17:12, 15:49, 18:24, 17:00, 16:44, and 14:37. Broberg also spent the majority of his ice time on the right side, his off-side. All of that makes him a prime candidate to be handed an offer sheet from another team. Or at least that's what Frank Seravalli believes. Seravalli was a guest on Oilers Now on Monday and laid out a potential scenario, "if I were an opposing team I'd be targeting Philip Broberg, I've said that before. I think he proved with his play in the playoffs that he should have been in this lineup a while before he was. For whatever reason that didn't work out." "I'd be throwing six-years times $4.5 or $5-million...I'd really try to make life uncomfortable for the Oilers." Seravalli then laid out a few reasons why it's in the Oilers best interest to hold onto Broberg, "this is a piece that they need for a lot of different reasons moving forward. Not just the youth that he brings but also from a cap perspective, also from an ability (perspective) as we saw in the playoffs." "If you really need him to, to play either side. He never looked rattled, it never looked like the moment was too big for him. I think those are all really important attributes." Offer sheets are incredibly rare in the NHL. Since 2006 there have only been 10 offer sheets. Two of those were not matched by the team that had control of the player. The Oilers sent an offer sheet for Dustin Penner in 2007 that was not matched by the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers sent a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick as compensation to the Ducks. Penner's deal was a five-year contract worth $21.5-million. Jesperi Kotkaniemi signed a one-year $6.1-million offer sheet from the Carolina Hurricanes. The Montreal Canadiens received a 1st and 3rd round pick in the 2022 draft from not matching the offer sheet. Given how rare offer sheets are, it's tough to see one be submitted for Broberg. But anything can happen in this league, so never say never.
Popular Post Elias Pettersson
I'm hoping a team offer sheets Broberg at $4.5 million for 7 years. No way Oilers can match. The compensation is only a second round pick. Chicago should be all over this... 5 1 1

They went out and got all those soft wingers to make McBaby happy, but they really screwed their cap. I mean look at next year. They have to re-sign both Draisaitl and Bouchard at a cost of probably $24 million. That leaves them with almost no cap space to sign another 6-7 guys. I could see a team also offer sheeting Dylan Holloway. Offer him $3 million for 5 years. Compensation is only a second round pick. If they trade for their 2nd back from t-bay using TO's 2nd and NYR's 3rd (or another pick to make up the value), then yes.
Highstickin
Oilers best play could be to package Holloway with a lesser value contract (say Brett Kulak) and try to sell to any team that will listen. Once those two are out: - sign Broberg around 1.5M on a 2-3 yr bridge (similar to what Samberg did last year with the Jets) - insert Connor Carrick or Troy Stecher to play with Nurse, who needs a puck mover to play with - inset Lavoie on the right side with Henrique to replace Holloway Is it ideal talent wise, maybe not but it gets them under the cap, keeps the harder to get young asset on the back end in Broberg and ensures other teams cannot offer sheet their players. Even if the offer sheets are matched, no GM wants other teams negotiating their contracts for them.

Even if they did this, they still would only have a 21-man roster and be right at the cap, and on top they lost Holloway to a cap dump. It may be the only way for them to get out of this mess though. IMO, they are either losing Holloway or Broberg, they can't keep them both.
VegasCanuck
Although I doubt anyone will actually do it, it would be awesome to screw with Edmontons cap...

I think they consider moving Holloway over Broberg just due to the pieces they have available for replacement. They have a couple pieces on the front end that could be plugged in to help soften the lose of Holloway, not sure the options on the back end are there to soften losing Broberg. They had to know this would be the result when they signed Henrique, Arvidsson and Skinner. Take out any one of these three and maybe you can keep both young guys.

I know we're tight on cap ourselves but if we can I would for sure.

Phil_314
Wish we could offer sheet him to an amount that the Oilers don't get compensated at all
SilentSam
I think they trade his rights for a plug / prospect , before they lose him for a 2nd round pick gamble . This has more to do with Broberg wanting out of Edmonton , than Re-signing with them. Agent and player were openly stating that in December. RFA’s. of good talent hold power these days . Since82
I would love if the Canucks were to offer sheet Holloway. His dad played briefly for the Canucks as a defenseman in the 80s. Bruce (his dad) use to jog up our street in my hometown with weights attached to his ankles and wrists; not common at the time for hockey players who were drinking beer and smoking darts at intermission.
flickyoursedin
Could they match a 2.75 mill offer sheet on either guy?
