Insider: Seth Jarvis Extension With Hurricanes "Pretty Close"

Former first-round pick Seth Jarvis had a breakout season for the Carolina Hurricanes last year, and he has become a critical part of their offence moving forward. The fact that the restricted free agent still doesn't have a contract shouldn't be a concern for Canes fans, however. So says hockey insider David Pagnotta on the NHL Network.

“I believe they are pretty close to an eight-year extension. That seems to be the word on the street. North of seven, perhaps even north of $7.5 million on an eight-year AAV. It sounds like they're pretty much right there with respect to a new extension for Seth Jarvis, so don't be surprised if we hear that coming in the next few days. “

Interestingly, previous reports had both sides talking in excess of an $8 million AAV, and in fact Adam Gold of the Canes Corner podcast speculated that it could end up in the $8.5-8.75 per year range. We'll see if it winds up closer to Pagnotta's projection or Gold's.

Either way, it will be a huge sigh of relief all around.

The Hurricanes weren't able to re-sign Jake Guentzel this offseason, so it was imperative that they come to an amicable long-term solution with Jarvis to lead the team into the future on the offensive end.

The 22-year-old, coming off his entry-level deal, essentially doubled his previous career high in goals, with 33, while adding 34 assists for 67 points in 81 games this past year. The two-way forward also posted another strong plus/minus rating, also his best yet, at +23.

Jarvis was a first-round pick at No. 13 overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He showed promise in his first two seasons with about 40 points each year and double-digit plus ratings in plus/minus. 2023-24 was a breakthrough to star level.

He’s basically Garland in a bigger body. Which is to say, a tremendous player.

Garland is a success story in itself. A 5th round pick that has gone on to solidify his place in the NHL as a smaller NHL forward. Jarvis is only 22 and is producing 40 points. There's so much room for potential.
