[Rumour] Garland to Pittsburgh

Recommended Posts

Not sure where it started but has been making the rounds since yesterday on various sites.  They seem to read it in one spot and then report on it.

If there is really a long term issue with the health of one of our goalies it certainly doesn’t seem crazy.

Garland and a pick for Nedeljevic and Eller.

We get some goaltending insurance and the cap works out.  It doesn’t make sense to get another goalie that pushes Silovs to the minors if they are going to be healthy at the start or near the beginning of the season.

Eller is a solid addition that maybe lets Suter stay in the top six.

I generally agree with the sentiment that this is giving away one of our best wingers last year for spare parts but that statement completely ignores the value of cap space that we would be accruing if this deal went through.
Still a no for me.

'Fraid not.  Both the old 3rd line C and backup goalie each have 2.5m salary.  The only gain is 2.5m

next year when the old guy is a UFA.

But why?

Well I think the post is self explanatory.  If we know one of the goalies will miss significant time, we have a dire need to address it so we don’t lose the entire season.

If that isn’t the case, then the trade doesn’t make sense.

Here's an article that shows the value of Eller and certainly would be a good

fit on the 3rd line.  The management really wants that 3rd goalie for the

coming season; given that the #1 in prone to injuries.

Still...it could be a risky move in trading Garly.  He has been an effective player for

the team and an important personality in the locker room.

Obviously it is only the goalie issue that would drive this, but Eller is definitely an upgrade at 3rd line centre and very useful player.

Even though the cap nets out the same, having Garland’s cap hit gone next season could be of a lot of value.  It could mean the difference in affording Boeser or not.

Debrusk-Petterson-Boeser

Suter-Miller-Hoglander

Joshua-Eller-Heinen

Sherwood-Blueger-Sprong

A couple of solid Pk duos and some spread out offensive production.

I saw a few roster GM posts making this trade on puckpedia last night so it might just be some fan trying to stir something up.

Probably as a result of the rumours rather than a bunch of folks independently coming up with the idea themselves.

This guy could be had for a similar cost to DeSmith. He could easily be beat out by Blomqvist in Pittsburgh. He was really good in the AHL last season.

We could also fit him with out LTIR space if we had to. Why trade Garland?

I think Nedeljkovic could still be a decent goalie at the NHL level (probably as a backup) but a return of this nature for Garland would seem to step back for the Canucks if this is genuinely being considered. There's no cap savings - Nedeljkovic is making $2.5M and Eller is making $2.45M while Garland is at $4.95M. Nedeljkovic has one more year on his contract which would mean potentially having a $2.5M backup through next season. Eller is 35 and, while still a decent 2-way forward, is definitely in the twilight of his career. Hard to believe the rumored deal even involves the Canucks sending their 2025 2nd to PIT.

Garland, despite lack of size, drives play and is reasonably productive, even at his salary level. If there was some cap space benefit or if the Canucks were receiving more assets back from PIT, then maybe it might be worth considering but this rumored deal sounds, as the name of the article states, pretty ridiculous.
