Vancouver Canucks Season-Opening Media Availability

Tocchet was gushing over Alriksson, he loves the kid. He remarked on all of his development. Also he wants to see Lekke play with really talented players, maybe he gives him a chance with Petey.  If they hit it off and Lekke comes out of the gate like Kuzmenko did in his rookie year, you never know.  All he needs is a chance

The fact that Demko wants to address the media by himself sounds to me like he will miss significant time

Ya, no need to keep it secret for a couple of weeks of extra rehab.  Allvin not addressing it and Demko wanting to do it for media seems like worst case scenario stuff.

They did say he was there and “working hard”, so that is some hope.

Taking my educated guess on the Demko injury since it's been so quite around him. I'm going to predict he has a Popliteus strain or tendonopthpy. I've only ever treated it once before, and it was in a curler, but my gut leads me to making this guess based off the limited information we have been given.

So you’re saying Demko has a “boo boo”?

Consideirng he says it's a muscle injury, does it sound consistent with a Popliteus muscle issue to you?  Would that be as rare as he says his issue is?

It's definitely an uncommon injury. But the way they are talking about it, being possible the first hockey player to have this injury, seems like that might be a step too far. That being said, I've worked in sports rehab my entire career, and only seen it once. So I guess it's possible? I don't have any better guesses at this point. Man.. I wish I know. I'm a injury nerd, would love to have more information.

Well I found a recent article on popliteus injuries in athletes that reviewed the existing literature and concluded that it's a very rare injury for an athlete to sustain in isolation: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8894959/.  They provide a table showing which types of athletes the injury occurred in most often and the majority were soccer or American football players.  There wasn't a single instance of a hockey player.  You may just be onto something here.👍

Simple solution: apply for a position with their medical staff.  :towel:

(then you might even get to go to games for free... though you might get called for duty when the game gets interesting)

When I was a young buck that was my dream. I've worked a very fortunate career, and did have the opportunity to work with some sports teams. Unfortunately there is no money is 95% of sports team gigs, and the professional teams jobs are near impossible to obtain. You can only work so long on free tickets to hockey/rugby games and thank yous. I've long since moved on from that dream. Now I teach the futures generations, maybe one of them can pick up where I left off and get that Canucks job I always dreamed of.

It's more common in those sports due to the action of the muscle. It's primary job is to help lock and unlock the knee. When you fully straighten your leg, your knee kinda clicks into place. Meaning you can have you leg fully extended and most of the big muscles don't need to do a lot of work. Hockey players do not spend very much time with their legs full extended, but when you're kicking you often fully extend. I'm still going with this as my guess, cause I don't have anything better.

How many mommy kisses to fix an ouchie of that magnitude? We kinda need him.

I think he's past mommy kisses. Sounds like they tried to baby it over the summer and hit a roadblock. This actually might be a dad's job and tell Demko to walk it off.
