I thought you were pulling my leg for a minute, I forgot about white noise. So what are we talking about, the most talented singers, most iconic, personal favourites, all the above?

I know that can be tough, because there are some singers who I don't think are as talented, but can really put soul into a song (I would put Janis Joplin in that grouping) For me there's Ann Wilson, Roy Orbison, and John Tams, and of course others but it's a start 2

Her music is not one of my go to's but I am in awe of her ability. I'm actually surprised that you chose her for that category. She doesn't have a beautiful voice; it was scraped raw by not learning how to spare her vocal chords while screaming. Having said that, she did have a natural ability to infuse her voice with guy wrenching soul, which makes a great talent. And oddly, one that would not have been half as good if her tone was more "pure". It's the rawness that makes her voice something special. Have you seen her documentary? She's a generational talent in my opinion. People have been trying to copy her style forever but I can't think of anyone that comes close. One thing that irks me is when a singer tries the force a rasp where there is none to begin with. There's a lot of that crap in country music, which is my guilty pleasure at the moment. Joplin is certainly as genuine as they come. Edited September 20 by JoeyJoeJoeJr. Shabadoo 1

I know what you mean about it being all over country. I mostly listen to older country singers (Cash, Waylon, etc) But yeah, matching the genuineness in Joplin's voice is tough. Not a lot of folks can pull that off. The only one I can immediately think of is Harry Chapin, another of my favorites.

Satchmo
I saw this lady live about 7 years ago and she blew me away. Angelique Kidjo: I'd put Mavis Staples on any great singers list too.

Another generational talent imo. If you like Cash and Jennings, you'll like him. As far as Joplin goes, I hope you do get a chance to see the documentary. I didn't know much about her outside of radio play, and to be honest, I saw it a long time ago so I don't remember much about the show except it was good. What I do remember is the hell she went through because of her looks etc. I think she was once voted the ugliest girl in school at one point. The other thing I remember is some of footage they had of her singing stuff I had never heard, and some of it blew my mind. Like, we'll never see the likes of it again good.

I have heard some of his stuff before. He does have a good old school country vibe with a nice clean voice.

Best I've ever heard live as well.

StrayDog
There are singers I think always make the list with incredible voices. Bing Crosby, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Freddie Mercury, Ann Wilson. So few that can match the sheer power and depth of their singing.

6of1_halfdozenofother
He might be an acquired taste, but I have mega-huge respect for Freddie Lim. He recently retired from politics after a term or two in the Taiwanese legislature, so he's now back doing music again. And his range... he can do this: and then turn around and do this:
StrayDog
Being able to do that much screaming and growl and not have any of it when doing something more melodic takes some ability!

I would add Tina Turner as well. As for the men I would add Bon Scott. One of the most unique voices in music imo. 1
