Despite what Alf might think. Dahlin is a solid player, and I think that's a logical choice.

Of all current Sabres I'm pretty sure he's played the most games for the franchise, with him being in his mid 20's and locked in long-term he's absolutely the guy who makes the most sense

He is their leader on the ice and he's undoubtedly the guy who has the biggest impact on their success, if Buffalo is to get back to being a playoff team sooner than later he'll probably be the primary driver

He's their Hughes in a way

Dahlin is what we had in Horfat Wallet. A guy who cheats the game for offence, and demands a max dollar (way overpay) contract is not a player to build around. Sabres will continue to be a loser team; now led by a loser captain.

Dahlin ain't as bad defensively as you make him out to be, and he eats up a lot of minutes for Buffalo, Buffalo's having been a losing team doesn't mean he's not a quality player

He was 5th in average time on ice for D last season, averaging 25:25 a night, more than Hughes's 24:41, and averaged 1:11 shorthanded a game, more than Hughes's average of 35 seconds per game; his PK results weren't amazing last season but these things can ebb and flow a bit

As for powerplay time, Hughes averaged 3:55 per game whereas Dahlin averaged 3:01

He's a legit #1 for Buffalo

As for his contract, he got market value for what he's done thus far, Hughes will too and that'll probably eclipse 12M

Dahlin sucks pucks. In redraft he is the fourth D man taken after Hughes, Bouchard, and Dobson. The guy is a dough head.

He'd probably go second behind Hughes, that's not an insult to Dahlin, we both know what kind of player Hughes is

He's proven more than either Bouchard or Dobson thus far and his lengthier track record shows it, he's entering his seventh full season whereas this will be Bouchard's fourth

Whether Bouchard would go ahead of Dobson again is anyone's guess, considering who Bouchard plays with their totals ain't all that far off the past three seasons

Dobson's put up 70 in 79, 49 in 78, and 51 in 80 the past three seasons whereas Bouchard has put up 82 in 81, 40 in 82, and 43 in 81

Dahlin's already put up five 40+ point seasons with three of those being 50+ seasons

Dahlin career is dash 70. There’s a big reason why the Sabres suck pucks. And he’s it. He’s a cheater for offence. And he’s a dough head. Bad combination in a player to lead your team if a club wants to win.

2018-19- Dahlin's first year the Sabres were -45 in goal differential.

19-20                                                                 -22

20-21                                                                 -61

21-22                                                                 -58

22-23                                                                 -4

23-24                                                                  +2

If your team sucks- your stats likely suck too.

Wow! Those numbers make Dahlin even worse than I thought. He’s minus 150! That’s winning, I guess, in Buffalo.  Good for ice fishing.

Plenty has been written about how flawed a stat plus/minus is, all one has to do is do a simple google search and explanations go back over a decade

It's not a stat one should use to paint the entire picture, if one wants to really dig into a player's performance there are better ways of doing so as opposed to relying on the flawed and simplistic plus/minus. There are better ways to look at player's performance than plus/minus.

This is a good place to start reading.

Folks have been criticizing this stat since the 70's. Brian Burke calls it the most useless statistic ever devised.

“[It is] the most useless statistic ever devised,” says Brian Burke, President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames. “It’s pretty simple. If your team stinks, so does your plus-minus. And it’s compounded if you play against the opposition’s top players.”

Here's another one.

And another one.

You know who cares about +/-? The players do. They know how important that stat is.
