Report: Maple Leafs' Cedric Pare Received Death Threats After Hit on Laine

The Toronto Maple Leafs/Montreal Canadiens rivalry has stooped to a dark new low, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. He reported on Insider Trading on Thursday that Cedric Pare received death threats from fans after his knee-on-knee hit sent Patrik Laine to the sidelines for two-to-three months.

“I'm told that the Toronto Maple leafs security group had to intervene and disable Pare's social media accounts based on death threats and abusive comments directed at him.”

After Laine went down with the injury, his Montreal teammate Arber Xhekaj exacted some revenge on Pare the old fashioned hockey way, with a few knuckle sandwiches. But death threats from fans is certainly taking this rivalry a bit too far.

"It's one thing to have a raw rivalry, it's another thing to cross the line," added Dreger.

As for Laine, it sounds like he's forgiven Pare, who sent him an apology by text. "I don't think anybody's trying to hurt anybody," said Laine. "Hockey's a fast game, and I kind of put myself in that situation a little bit trying to make a stop. It's just an unfortunate collision, and he texted me afterward, which I respect him for."

Regardless, all eyes will be on Montreal on opening night October 9th, as the Leafs pay the Habs a visit to kick off the season.

Will Pare be on the Leafs opening night?

Sadly there's a small element of "fans" like that in every fanbase.  I remember Kotkaniemi got death threats from some Canucks fans after the Pettersson injury.

How wacked has the world become?

It’s the French, we’ve  always done that.  In fact the irrelevant Bloc leader is still talking about Québécois separating and no one really cares.

Bullshit. It's just social media giving voice to people who shouldn't have access to it

Didn’t Reinbacher get death threats from Habs’ fans after he was drafted ahead of Michkov?

Is this seriously an add you get? That’s really bad. It’s advertising a knife for “cutting people”.

Yes that's the add when I scroll down to the bottom of the screen on this thread. I work in Forestry so all my ads are outdoorsy but the ESL was really thick on this one.

For some reason, I don’t understand, all my adds are about booze.

I am sorry but whoever sent those threats SERIOUSLY overestimates Laine as a player.

It doesn't matter. These threats have no place in any democratic society. I don't care if they were directed at someone controversial like Nick Cousins, or to a superstar player. It's fucked up.

Pare is literally a plug who's never even played in the NHL.  I mean who would actually be following him on social media?

And Pare won’t play a real game for leafs. Unlike the Habs, who are a craperolla club, the Leafs are good. Their plugs stay in the minors. Sorry Habds fans. But your team has their plugs in the NHL. Sure sign of a loser team. Losers!

I imagine it was more a case of a group of unhinged individuals seeking him out on social media
