I disagree on this - I am not Gretzky fan by a long shot but you have to remember back in the 80s and 90s players were allowed to clutch and grab and hack and slash and crosscheck. It was a different league back then and I don't think McDavid would have excelled as much as people think he would. Right now he gets to wind up in his own end and have free will on the ice - look how much he whines now when he is impeded in the least. Different game back then and players today I think would struggle.

Absolutely!

I mean, they had to practically piggy back guys down the ice at times. Different deal and McDavid would not have fared well. As a guy who looks (whines) for calls, nope.

Yeah Mario Lemieux would seem to be going in on semi-breakaways sometimes with three guys from the other team waterskiing behind him.

Gretzky admittedly benefited from a league wide unspoken rule not to hit him too hard (Gary Suter excepted) but at the same time Wayne earned that respect (and also had Semenko / McSorley earning it for him).

Crosby will be mentioned as a top 5 player all time.  Possibly as one fo the greatest captains in history and he played with the same kind of calibre HoF roster that Lemieux and Messier did (barring Gretzky) in Malkin, Letang, Fleury.  Honestly, Crosby has had some insanely amazing players on his team over his time

McDavid is arguably one of the best individual players to ever play the game.  Period.  If he was playing in the same era as Gretzky it's possible he was putting up 200 point seasons as well.  Doing so without a Malkin, Letang or Fleury or Kessel el etc etc etc.  He has Draisatl now sure but that's it.

Bedard at this point looks like he MAY be a good player.  Maybe even a great one down the line.  it took Mackinnon 3-4 years to start really showing who he was with the help of Raantanen and then Makar.  But at this point he's just a really good player.

So at this point.  No.  not even in the same breath as Crosby or McJesus.

Meh.  Draisatl always does fine when he's out.   Think McDavid is a perimeter star nothing more.   He's the GOAT for pouty face though.

Right now Bedard seems to be tracking to be something along the lines of Patrick Kane to me.  I guess we'll see in the years to come...but as 1st overall picks go I think he'll be closer to Vincent Lecavalier than to Mario Lemieux, Crosby or McDavid.  But who knows.  At any rate he has certainly avoided being Alexandre Daigle.

And note that I thought both Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews probably shouldn't have been named to the best 100 players of all time.  At least not while someone like Dale Hawerchuk didn't make the list.

Toews was ridiculous.   Hossa was a better player was he named?   That's just his own team.    He did make it to number 83 on the Athletics list ... which has a few players out and a few players in that are questionable for sure.   Kopitar versus Toews?    Who's more deserving.    Pre-mature for sure.   Kane sure.    Even then some HHOF long time snubs,  are/were  awfully close.  Cups are cups.   Malkin.  That guy who didn't get up fight in Piscany was good too.   Hawerchuk.

As for Bedard, Kane is a pretty good comp and expectation as well.

Being generous, there's maybe 2 posters in this thread who believe he is generational, including myself. The majority are questioning him and/or stating he isn't and won't be in the same league as McDavid or Crosby.

So if he is generational, then he's being underrated by most right now.

On the mainstream side of hockey, he is considered generational. And was before he was drafted. He was getting endorsements before he was drafted. He was selling out NHL arenas for junior hockey. He was being compared to McDavid and Crosby side by side.  He has endorsements from Hyundai, Sherwood, Lululemon, Gatorade, Upperdeck, Holt Renfrew and Biosteel.

So was Jack Hughes.   So was Tavares.   So ... how's that going for them?
