There are (typically) two factions competing with each other: the Mafia and the Town. The Mafia is an "informed minority" whereas the Town is an "uninformed majority." Each round or cycle, there is a public vote in which every player in the game nominates one player whom they would like to eliminate from the contest. It is the goal of the Mafia to gain full control of this vote by reducing the number of Town players in the game to the point where they are equal to or less than the Mafia. It is the goal of the Town to use this vote to pick off members of the Mafia.

What is meant by "informed minority" and "uninformed majority" is this: the Mafioso are fewer in number than the Town to start the game, usually amounting to roughly 1/3 of the total of Town players in the game. However, they have the power of information above what the Town members possess; the Mafioso are aware of their teammates and have a private chat which they can communicate in to scheme and address concerns about the game privately before acting. The Townies, however, only know their own identity (or affiliation); they are in the dark about all other members in the game, and they have to build trust with players and deduce/abduce whether others are Town- or Mafia-affiliated.

There are also special roles in the game; for example, the Town may have a Sheriff--a special role capable of discerning, by targeting another player, their affiliation. Or they may have a Vigilante--a role capable of carrying out kills on other players. The Mafia may also have special roles. There is lots of possibility for flavour and oddities.

At the end of each Day cycle, the player who is leading in votes is removed from the game and silenced. Then, either the next Day starts right away, or we progress into a Night cycle where there is a break from the public discourse and the specials have time to submit their actions. There's really no set standard on CFF any longer regarding whether we have a Night cycle or not; it's become more commonplace, but for ages we just had "Days only."

I hope this isn't too confusing and gives a good general overview of the game. If it is confusing, just know that the best way to become less confused is to jump into a game. 😉

e: oh, and the Mafia gets a kill to use every round. This may be blocked by special roles, although that's rare and requires luck and coordination on the part of the Town.

Thanks for explaining, sounds fun iam in!
