The Poppy rant Don went on didn't even crack the top 50 of "Controversial" things he said over the years.. Soft Liberal media got that man fired.. & that scumbag Ron McLean stood by and watched him get dragged through the mud.. Ron truly is a P.O.S for that! Especially since Don Cherry in the early 2000s threatened to walk/quit HNIC when The CBC fired Ron McLean.. Don was the one that got him his job back! TRUE friendship. Just sad Ron wasn't there to have Don's back when he needed it most!

rm will carry that guilt his entire life. I’m sure not a day goes by that he doesn’t regrets throwing Don Cherry under the bus to save his own skin. Such a coward. It will haunt him till he dies.
It will be his legacy.

Great post. Cherry never glossed any issue over. Respect is earned not a given. He was not canned for what he said during his poppy shout out. The CBC had been out to get him for years. What he has done for vets and serving members of the serving soldiers never gets credit. McLean will always be a pos to me.

What is HNIC today? The program is more about PR than hcokey. Bieksa is OK but he is reigned in. Don Cherry would talk hockey and had knowledge of the game going back 50 years. Not much that he forgot. I miss Don and wish him well.

I would cut Don Cherry a bit more slack (even though you could call me a "liberal"/really I'm a Red Tory) since you *HAVE* to take account when he was born.  He didn't grow up to be a man in the 60s/70s like Ron McLean.  Not excusing everything Cherry may (or may not) have said on certain things, but that is an important distinction.

Ron McLean is smart enough to know better.  He throw Cherry under the bus basically by not supporting him.  A coward.

It was time for him to go and they should have sent MacLean packing with him.
Appreciate the support of veterans but didn’t need the jingoism and fear of other on public display every weekend, we get enough of that on the American news.

I agree, and come from a multi-generational military family.  Cherry pretends to "support our troops" but never saw a stupid imperialist war he didn't support.  Well guess what, "our boys", the ones he cries over, die in them (along with the demonized people whose lives don't count for him).  The truth is he loves wars of aggression, not the poor sods who fight them.  He's a flaming fucking hypocrite.

Amazing how those troops cheered everytime he went on a overseas visit to our troops in the field. Your full of shit.

I think it was last weekend or the one before, KB dropped the S-bomb live on CBC...I thought for sure he was gonna get fired for that one, but his contributions are highly regarded so I guess he gets a pass from the Libs.

Hope he's doing alright, still glad he's gone though, it was time to move on. He had a good long run, longer than most, but nothing lasts forever.

It's one thing when they're still on duty, in danger, and eager for any sign of support from home.   It's quite another when they come back damaged and the army and often the rest of society wants nothing to do with them.  Think I'm full of shit?  Look at the suicide rates.

HNIC was firing people for really stupid things well before "woke-ism".  Ask Dave Hodge:

Aren’t you conflating your personal hatred of imperialism with Cherry’s support of our military, and the poppy?

The “stupid” wars that were fought and won enabling you to speak your mind publicly without persecution?

CMIIW however it sounds like your “generational military family” profited from the wars by way of paycheques and pensions.

Did you watch the video?

Don Cherry is encouraging the public, as always , to purchase poppies and wear them in  respect and appreciation of veterans. He encourages  people to donate generously. The funds support veterans yet you say “society wants nothing to do with them”.

I think you anger may be misplaced and possibly sour  “ Grapes.”

I find it impossible to be angry at new Canadians who don't wear poppies when they are unaware of the significance, the history and the tradition of poppies. November 11th means different things to different nations. In the US they call it Veteran's Day, where they celebrate the boys who came back. In Canada and other countries in the Commonwealth we mourn the boys who did not come back. Americans wear poppies on Memorial Day in May and we don't. So would it be okay for Americans to criticize us for not wearing poppies if we happened to be in their country on Memorial Day? Cherry targetted the wrong group; he should have been talking about the generations of natural born Canadians who have no interest or inclination to learn about the sacrifices made not only by those who died, but by those wounded, battered and broken men who came back.
