This is just insanity, I can't believe this is an actual real thing that happened, society I don’t know anymore, people are struggling and people are spending $6.2M on this kind of stuff, a piece of duct tape and a banana that cost $.30 as art, and the person says they're just going to eat it.

Is this banana duct-taped to a wall really worth $6.2 million US? Somebody thought so

Conceptual artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan first debuted in 2019

A piece of conceptual art consisting of a banana duct-taped to a wall sold for $6.2 million US at an auction in New York on Wednesday.

Comedian, by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was a phenomenon when it debuted in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach, where those who attended the art show tried to make out whether the single yellow piece of fruit affixed to a white wall with silver duct tape was a joke or cheeky commentary about questionable standards among art collectors.

At one point, another artist took the banana off the wall and ate it. The piece attracted so much attention that it had to be withdrawn from view. Three editions of the work sold for between $120,000 and $150,000, according to the gallery handling sales at the time.

Five years later, someone has now paid more than 40 times that top price point at a Sotheby's auction.

Or, more accurately, that person has purchased a certificate of authenticity that gives them the authority to duct-tape a banana to a wall and call it Comedian

Bidding started at $800,000 and within minutes shot up to $2 million, then $3 million, then $4 million, as the auctioneer joked, "It's slipping through the auction room."

The final hammer price announced in the room was $5.2 million, which didn't include about $1 million in auction house fees, paid by the buyer.

Sotheby's called Cattelan "among contemporary art's most brilliant provocateurs."

"He has persistently disrupted the art world's status quo in meaningful, irreverent, and often controversial ways," the auction house said in a description of Comedian.

Too derivative.

Maybe throwing things?

I love the idea of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sells

i remember this happening before (too).

LOL at the fact that I could've had a winner! Long ago, I nuked a frozen dinner too long (one that had looked a bit freezer burnt) and it created a hard, hockey puck like mass of colour. I stuck a banana on top and took a picture, sent it to my daughter. My new sailboat. If I find the picture I'm posting it. I DID IT FIRST

I didn't realize it was "art". Damn, my chance to make a billion bucks...gone!!

Do you get the wall too? which is attached to the building.

For the integrity of this amazing piece, the building will have to go with the sale. I imagine the building is a downtown art gallery?

Therefore the price point is acceptable.

Kind of guessing that the US "elite" rubbing shoulders with the new US ruling party kicked the stool of "food prices are to high/the cost of living is to high" with this one.

Sort of sarcasm but also sort of not.

This just highlights the insane level of wealth people have vs a growing number of people who will never even be in the same zip code of that kind of $$$

society way too busy arguing about pro nouns, to care about wealth inequity.

Remember when Occupy wall street was a thing?

Don't worry, it will be a thing again; but Trump will deal with it appropriately as it will not be the same as the "day of love" and it will be dealt with while they all eat drywall bananas and look on in amusement

Someone is going to sell a fart as art one of these days.

Meanwhile, real pieces of art, like those Gwyneth Paltrow candles, are plentiful and more affordable.
