I don't remember seeing much about it on the site but I just wanted to observe that Canucks alumni and underappreciated NHL great tough guy Glen Cochrane passed away in January of this year.

The tough defenseman played two season for the Canucks in the mid-80s and was even selected as one of the fairly few Canucks to be included in this set of interesting / creative hockey cards from Kraft, which I think was on boxes of macaroni.

1986-87 NHL Kraft Drawings Glen Cochrane Canucks V32500

As for his career, he played in 10 different NHL seasons and is mostly remembered for his work with the Flyers where, patrolling the blueline he was one of the league's top enforcers, and topped out with 329 penalty minutes in 1981-82, the year the Canucks first went to the Cup Final.  That was one of his five seasons with over 200 PIMs.  He had three seasons in the NHL's top ten in penalty minutes, with his 329 being 3rd that year behind only Paul Baxter and our own Tiger Williams.

I remember 1 game, against Edmonton, it looked like a fight between Semenko and Cochrane was about to happen, but Stan Smyl  got to Dave, before Glenn could skate that far.

Stan tried , in that fight, but was outmatched.

-----------------------------

^^ Glen's sister was a guest on Jack Webster's t.v. show.

first time I ever heard of 'weird stuff' going on with cows.

turned out she was talking about 'mad cow' disease.

Stan was a wolverine, but sometimes he would take on a polar bear and just couldn't make up the size difference.  However, Stan had some crazy moves that could make up the difference sometimes.  I don't know if I can find the clip but one time he basically flipped his opponent in the fight to the ice with a judo toss.

Is everyone who ever played for the Canucks getting their own thread?🤣

Anyone I feel like talking about might get one.  The point was, however, that these are notable Canuck alumni.  That people might think the mention of their names means "everyone who ever played for the Canucks" gets a thread is kind of why I felt it should be pointed out why these players are significant alumni.

It is not the biggest achievement of anyone I have made a thread about, but Cochrane was 3rd in the NHL in penalty minutes one year, during the heyday of penalty minutes.  That alone makes anyone notable.

But that aside, I also made the thread because the guy died this year.

65 GP is good enough for page 34 in my Canucks binder (65-69 games played).  I guess one guy on this page turned into Markus Naslund 😅.  That Kraft card would've been found in the box, although I think a bigger version could've been cut from the box too.  I was fortunate to find one for sale online, as I think that is Cochrane's only card in a Canuck uniform (that would fit in those 9 card pages at least).

Spoiler

3 assists is good enough for 476th in all-time Canuck scoring.  You know you're not on the team for your offense when your in the same level as Alex Auld.

  Alex Auld G 81 0 3 3
  Glen Cochrane D 63 0 3 3
  Grant Martin LW 24 0 3 3
  Asthon Sautner D 23 0 3 3
  Jimmy Vesey LW/RW 20 0 3 3
  Rod Buskas D 17 0 3 3

I remember that incident very vividly as well. It was the ultimate testiment to Smyl's courage and leadership. He was one of the league's best fighters pound-for-pound, but Semekno has just too many pounds on him. And havingan enforcer of Semenko's size and stength was very rare at the time, as I can't recall any other bigger fighters that Smyl clearly lost too, since almost all that he fought were bigger than him.  However, I do remember Cochrane trying very hard to get into that fight to 'rescue' Smyl, and him being held back by a future Canuck--Randy Gregg.  I wish that there was a better video record of some of these epic fights from the 70's and 80's on HockeyFights.com!
