-Buzzsaw- Posted November 24 Posted November 24 (edited) Ok, I'm watching the Ottawa game, and the Pettersson line is putting in a great performance... 3 goals, 7 points. Pettersson is a big part of all three goals although he only had two assists. Also makes a number of excellent defensive plays. So fast forward to the third period, just after the 5 on 3 PP... where the team didn't score, but they came close. But what do I see? Not Tocchet patting Pettersson on the back... No, I see him berating Pettersson while pointing at a clipboard, where clearly the PP plays are drawn up. He seems to be blaming him for the PP not scoring. Pettersson is politely turning to listen... although the game is going on in front of him and he'd prefer to watch what's happening... he has a puzzled look on his face... like "what's with this coach?" WTF ?>??>? First we get the Miller benching, and then Miller mysteriously taking a leave... now Tocchet is giving Pettersson sh*t on a night when he and his line have played excellently. Something is clearly wrong with Tocchet's understanding of how to motivate players on his team... or how to encourage them and get them in a positive frame of mind. I have been watching Tocchet's handling of Pettersson since he started as Head Coach... and I can't remember one occasion when Tocchet went out of his way to compliment his play. What I have seen a lot of is Tocchet forcing Pettersson to play with a lot of mediocre players who don't necessarily fit his style. Yeah, lately Petey has been playing better, mainly because he had a chance to rebuild his confidence by playing with Garland for a couple games. But overall, Petey's confidence is not where it was before Tocchet took over. Pettersson is a core player on this team... especially right now with Miller/Boeser/Demko out. He has to be given all the encouragement and tools to allow him to succeed... or the team won't. Edited November 24 by -Buzzsaw- 1 1 1

fanfor42 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Shrug. I thought the Tocchet Petey clipboard looked like a teaching moment. And yes Petey is playing better and I think that Tocchet has put him with DeBrusk and Sherwood and it is working.. So not sure what the OP is going on about. 2

Petey and Hronek and Debrusk (our remaining core players) were fantastic and you complain about the coach! Holy Sh*t man! Be a fan and not a goifwrdoidme. 1 1 1
cripplereh Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Have to keep the players playing is what I saw. Coaches need to keep the players on the level and RT does that.
HOCKEYGOD77 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 YOU LETTHE COACHES DO THEIR THING..TOCH IS NOT DUMB..HE KNOWS SMART HOCKEY HE KNOWS SKILLED HOCKEY HE KNOWS TOUGH HOCKEY..HE KNOWS HOCKEY.... 1 1
Drakrami Posted November 24 Posted November 24 uhh.. More like what's with you?? lol. The things you are describing and puzzled about. "Pettersson while pointing at a clipboard, where clearly the PP plays are drawn up. He seems to be blaming him for the PP not scoring. " Sounds like Tocchet is trying to coach and win. Doing his job. 1
Canucks164cup Posted November 24 Posted November 24 I'm still not a Pettersson fan, it's going to take a while for me to change my view on that or if it ever does tbh, but what I will admit and acknowledge is his play in the last couple weeks has improved a lot, compared to where he was playing from the start of the season, so I give him credit for that. I just still don't see him as an elite player who is a dominant force in this league like some of the elites that are in this game right now, and with him being paid as the 5th highest player in this league, I expect more from him and just overall stronger type of player to justify being paid like that. Him and his agent are the ones who pushed for this salary, so before people start saying things like, you can't compare or judge him based on what he makes, yes I can, because they believe this is what he's worth. Regarding what you're seeing with Tocchet, I honestly think he sees what I see a bit, he's unfortunately too soft still and it's frustrating especially for a coach who expects a tougher style of play and expects guys who are supposed to be your top guys, make and do stuff that top guys do on a regular basis. Tocchet has high expectations and wants players playing and doing things the right way all the time, he also played and grew up in a different era of hockey, where things were tougher and there just was no limits really on how players were told to do things, and if you didn't do it right, you were punished. Obviously times have changed a bit and finding that right balance on how to address issues with players now a days are a lot harder to deal with imo. You don't want to be just a push over, so you don't hurt someone's feelings, but you need to make sure the player gets the message still. You can't just expect that because so and so player has been playing better now, they just get a free pass to not do the other things right. Like look at John Tortorella, he imo is old school, you either like him or you don't, and it will work for some and won't work for others, but is it wrong... I don't think so, he just wants the best out of his players all the time, and I believe this is what Tocchet wants out of Petey as well. I know you're not a huge Tocchet fan from seeing some posts in the Rangers GDT and you're entitled to your opinion not saying your not, but like others have mentioned I believe you're looking into this a little too much, and just let the coach, coach. Whether it works or not for Petey time will tell obviously, but Tocchets record as a Canuck coach is pretty damn impressive imo, I haven't felt this confident in a Canucks coach in Vancouver since Quinn and Crawford days tbh, I say just let him coach and see what happens. 1
