RWJC Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Kevin Shattenkirk Facing Retirement After Rejecting Offer From Western Canadian Team James Wilson Tuesday, November 26, 2024 Kevin Shattenkirk, a 35-year-old defenseman and 2020 Stanley Cup champion, appears to be contemplating retirement after a 14-season NHL career. Following a productive 2023-24 season with the Boston Bruins, where he recorded 24 points (6 goals, 18 assists) in 61 games, Shattenkirk reportedly turned down a contract offer from a Western Canadian team, potentially the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, or Vancouver Canucks, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post. While still capable of providing veteran stability on the blue line, Shattenkirk may now prioritize proximity to his Long Island home or an ideal competitive situation, limiting his options in the free-agent market. Shattenkirk had previously expressed interest in joining the Oilers, with Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet noting on the 32 Thoughts podcast, “I’ve heard that Shattenkirk would love to be a part of that Oilers team if there’s a spot for him.” However, Edmonton’s limited cap space and roster constraints made negotiations tough. Brooks speculated that Shattenkirk’s preference to stay closer to home might narrow his opportunities to Eastern Conference teams, though no significant offers have materialized. Without the right fit, Shattenkirk may choose to end his career rather than sign in a less-than-ideal scenario. If this marks the conclusion of Shattenkirk’s NHL journey, he leaves behind a career spanning 952 games with seven teams, including the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, and Tampa Bay Lightning. He amassed 484 points (103 goals, 381 assists) and earned a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2020. https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2024/11/kevin-shattenkirk-facing-retirement.html 1 Quote

Warhippy Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I'd suggest it was vancouver or edmonton. vancouver due to Tocchet, edmonton due to $$$ Tocchet and him would not mesh at all. Edmonton is edmonton and having zero cap space means it wouldn't be worth it. Shame but oh well. Hang em up shatten-duece Quote
AlwaysACanuckFan Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I guess Kevin took a Shattenkirk after receiving the offer Quote
Coconuts Posted November 26 Posted November 26 (edited) Only needs 48 games to hit 1k, I don't see why he wouldn't just take what he can get at this point Maybe it doesn't matter to him, but I think most guys would want to hit 1k if they were that close Edited November 26 by Coconuts 1 1 1 1 Quote

Play one more year even if the fit wasn’t ideal, hit your 1000 games, then hang em up. I’m guessing he gambled that there would be more offers and lost. 1 Quote

Probably, but not necessarily I'm assuming he's kept up with training/skating, but maybe he hasn't Parise did it with the Avs recently Could be tough to make it happen, but it could happen Quote
-Buzzsaw- Posted November 26 Posted November 26 (edited) The Canucks don't really need another '...old and slow' and not too big defenseman for the bottom 4. The guy they needed will be playing for the Bruins tonight, but management decided he wasn't work the $ he was asking... and unfortunately management was probably correct. They spent the money on Desharnais, Forbort and several others... maybe combined they could have paid for Zadorov... and gotten 3 years of good service from him, but he wanted six. Shitty situation which is going to get worse with fall of Canadian dollar. Shattenkirk was paid just over $1 mil when he was with Bruins... he probably wants 1.4 to play with Canucks... which is too much. League minimum maybe. DeNiro Posted Tuesday at 11:27 PM Posted Tuesday at 11:27 PM Never understand players that age turning down offers. Like if you really wanna play and there’s only one option, then take it. You can always get traded later. Gotta think he’s not that serious about playing. Might be best to hang them up. 1 1 Quote
