Kevin Biestra Posted Thursday at 08:42 PM Posted Thursday at 08:42 PM (edited) From the files of largely forgotten very good players who enhanced the history of the Canucks by wearing the jersey and adding our colors to their career is one of our first very good American players, Tom Fergus. Fergus was a part of our 1991-92 and 1992-93 back to back division championships, and the only regular season championships in the first few decades of our history other than 1974-75 when goaltender Gary Smith took the team on his back for over 70 games and almost won the Hart Trophy. Tom Fergus was very much cut from the cloth of the 1982 Canucks or 1987 Flyers rosters where there were no 100 point players, but three lines deep of 55-90 point players got the team to the Stanley Cup Final when combined with otherworldly goaltending. For the Canucks... Stan Smyl, Thomas Gradin, Ivan Hlinka, Ivan Boldirev, Tiger Williams, Darcy Rota, Curt Fraser etc. For the Flyers... Brian Propp, Rick Tocchet, Tim Kerr, Pelle Eklund, Ilkka Sinisalo, Dave Poulin, Scott Mellanby etc. Tom Fergus would have fit right in on either team. Fergus had back to back 73 point seasons and but for injuries, would have had seven straight 60 point seasons (he never dipped below 49 points in that stretch). He also had 67, 63 and 61 point seasons. When he got off to a slow start with Toronto in 1991-92, we acquired him on waivers and he scored 34 points in 44 games for the Canucks the rest of the way (and had 5 goals in 15 playoff games). He finished his career with 235 goals (5 less than Henrik Sedin) and 581 points in 726 games. Edited Thursday at 09:08 PM by Kevin Biestra Quote
