I have no problem with Marner's statement. The Toronto media and much of the fanbase DOES give them the kind of attention that gods get. Who is better suited to make that observation? Or is it bad that he actually said out loud what a lot of people already think?

I've never heard of a congregation wanting to trade their god, but sure.
