The Canadian Football League is investigating allegations made by a former Toronto Argonauts strength and conditioning coach who alleges to have been wrongfully dismissed after being harassed by quarterback Chad Kelly, the league announced Wednesday.

The league said it has opened the investigation in accordance with its gender-based violence policy.

The coach filed a statement of claim with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice last week alleging a pattern of harassment by Kelly that began with unwanted romantic advances and escalated into instances of threatening language.

The coach said the club did not act when told of Kelly’s behavior and accused assistant general manager John Murphy of saying the report “opened a can of worms that didn’t need to be opened.”

The Argonauts said in a statement the club will cooperate with the CFL’s investigation. An Argonauts spokesman referred The Associated Press to the team statement when asked if Kelly was available for comment. Kelly's agent, Chris Lambiris, said neither he nor Kelly could comment.

“The Toronto Argonauts share the CFL’s commitment to providing healthy and positive work environments,” the team statement reads. “The organization will reserve any further comment until the conclusion of the league’s investigation.”

The CFL said it is taking the allegations “very seriously.”

The coach said they were told Jan. 29 that their contract would not be renewed. The coach is seeking $80,000 from Kelly and a total of $85,714 from the Argonauts.

The AP does not identify alleged victims of sexual harassment unless they grant permission to be named.

Kelly, named the CFL's most outstanding player last season, played college football at Clemson and Mississippi. He is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly and was the final pick of the 2017 NFL draft.

Got kicked off of Clemson's team, as well as the Denver Broncos for being a douchebag off the field.  Disgusting to see Toronto covering for him.

Covington coming home.

The BC Lions have made a big splash ahead of 2024 training camp with the signing of National defensive lineman Christian Covington. The Lions originally selected Covington in round five (43rd overall) of the 2015 CFL Draft.

“It’s truly an honour to come home and play in front of my friends and family,” Covington said.

“I’ve continued to follow the Lions throughout my professional career and it gives me great excitement to join the team at a pivotal time in franchise history. We all understand and embrace the goal of bringing the Grey Cup back home.”

Yes, a solid signing. His father, Grover Covington was a standout defensive end for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. I believe that Grover holds the CFL record for the most sacks in a career.

Hope that his health is good. He was dealing with some injury problems for the last couple of seasons in the NFL.

Apparently, Christian has dropped his playing weight down to 280 lbs. from his NFL weight of 300 lbs. Needed to get lighter to play on the bigger Canadian field.

Along with Josh Banks, we should have a pretty solid interior defensive front.  I am looking forward to seeing Christian play for the Lions.

TORONTO — The CFL suspended Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly for at least nine regular-season games Tuesday following its investigation into a lawsuit filed by a former strength-and-conditioning coach against both the player and club.

According to the CFL, Kelly is also suspended for Toronto's two pre-season games for violating its gender-based violence policy. Kelly must undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend mandatory counselling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert.

The CFL has pleasantly surprised me with this suspension.

Minimum 9 games- if all the mandated counselling sessions, and rules are adhered to.

Should have been a lifetime ban considering the seriousness of the allegations and his prior history.  The guy's proven himself to be a complete piece of shit everywhere he's gone.

Which means he is unlikely to do the required tasks, so the suspension will be longer, perhaps the remainder of his career.

I'd guess this 9 games, as it is, will already be in the top 5 lengthiest suspensions in CFL history.

Toronto will likely be looking for a starting QB, at least on a temp basis.

Might get a good deal if the Leo's trade them Dane Evans?

A familiar name may garner a lot of attention… Nathan Rourke.

Even better- a true something, for nothing deal!!! 🙂

ps- didn't know Dane called it done. However coming back as a temp, and maybe sticking it out for the whole year, if he likes it, might appeal to him.
