The Muscovite plains are a trifecta of inefficiency in agricology, not rich in oil/minerals & lacking in native ports, strategic & defendable military barriers. The plains are cold with short growing seasons, lacking heavy humidity or rainfall and far from volcanic rich soils. Even animal rich native hunting grounds are hundreds, often a thousand kilometers away. It is not a bread basket capable of feeding large populations. Too far from anyplace to be a transport hub, or inexpensively supply itself via trade. So it has always expanded, in search of enslavable or taxable workforces, resources, goods, markets & food, natural barriers to protect them from invasion.. Russians have perennially drifted from the plains towards the Black & Caspian sea's. Ten time zones away to Vladivostok in the 1600's. Only St Petersburg's port is open most of the year, if that is not a Slavic, or Viking home port to someone's sense of history. Simply to have access to shipping ports, trade. Perhaps until they develop intellectual property that can command markets? Russia will always have to be an aggressor. Or @BlockerHigh we can just grant them these populations to enslave or slaughter at their behest, lands, businesses., resources, ports, markets and goods without cost. So they will offer us 'peace?'

Based in the municipality of Višegrad, this Russian detachment took part in some of the heaviest fighting for the control of this town and the neighboring UN Safe Areas of Žepa, and Goražde.[2] Eyewitnesses and those who survived torture, rape and killings in and around Višegrad during the fall 1992 and winter 1993 confirm that the Russian volunteers also assisted the Višegrad-based killing squad known as the Avengers (Osvetnici). They were led by the convicted war criminal, Milan Lukić. The unit’s most prominent members were Sredoje Lukić, Mitar Vasiljević (both convicted of war crimes by the ICTY), Vidoje Andrić, Momir Savić, Željko Lelek, Oliver Krsmanović, and Dragan Savić. They tortured, raped, and murdered Muslim men and women from the municipality of Višegrad. The available sources tell us that every tenth pre-1990 inhabitant of the municipality of Višegrad (almost exclusively of Islamic faith) is listed as either dead or missing.[3] Moreover, the testimony of a rape survivor, Mevluna Jašarević, mentioned Russian soldiers inside the room in the Vilina Vlas spa-resort where torture and rape, and the subsequent suicide of the famous local beauty, Jasmina Ahmetspahić, took place. The witness, a rape victim herself, described how a Russian soldier was holding beaten-up and bloodied Jasmina by the collar of her unbuttoned white shirt. Suddenly, according to this witness, Jasmina spread her arms wide and took off her shirt before jumping to her death (or salvation) through a glass window of a third floor hotel room.

Russia has not even agreed to stop attacking. So far billions has been vastly less expensive than a World War, our soldiers, NATO boots on the ground. Imagine if a gang of street fighters came to your street, in your town. Beat the crap out of you, your friends. Bashed in the windows of your home. Steal your beer, your food, your fish. I won't get in to harsher realities. No arrests, jail; held account for justice? Or just let go if they promise to stop! Do you really think they will just go away? Your wish for peace is noble! I applaud the concept. My opinion only? Such a wish without justice. Someone has to fight until there is a break in their activities. It will become like a prayer it won't snow & we should prefer it not to be cold in Winter. I applaud your sentiment. Reality says it is a great deal more difficult.

This is the Holodomor memorial in Edmonton Zelensky mentioned today. I am proud my own father helped with the funding of this, the organization and funding of a similar memorial within a year in front of city hall in Winnipeg below. I took these pictures between my last two visits home to Canada.
