  1. Huh.  TIL, something I've seen a bunch of times and thought was common is actually fairly rare.

     

    While I find it difficult to believe there's only 9 in the world, apparently this isn't as common as I thought it was.

     

    By the way, it's not actually eternal.  Occasionally someone will be a jackass and put it out with water and you have to re-light it.

      Very cool!  That's a bit of an oopsie the Soviets did there.  🤣

       

      The flame in the video is about 15-20 minutes from where I live now and is within walking distance from where my parents live.

       

      It's completely natural.

       

      There are references to it going back to the 1600's and the local indians even had stories about it that were rumored to stretch back much further into the past than that.

       

      I keep wondering when some jackass will decide to ruin it for everybody and blow it up with a stick or bundle of dynamite.
