Female goalie Mariah Fujimagari earns first-ever win with Canucks' affiliate

 

History was made in Kalamazoo last night, and there’s a Vancouver Canucks connection.

 

Goalie Mariah Fujimagari won her first-ever game for the Kalamazoo Wings, the Canucks’ ECHL affiliate. She is the first-ever woman to be rostered by the Wings, as well as the first to record a victory for the franchise.

 

While there have been other women to play goalie at the ECHL level in the past, it’s been quite some time since someone accomplished the feat. Erin Whitten played in four games with the Toledo Storm during the 1993-94 season, posting a 2-0 record. During that same year, Canadian Manon Rhéaume played eight regular season games. She also appeared in one more game during the following season.

 

Fujimagari was put into last night’s preseason game against the Toledo Walleye during the third period, where she made nine saves to help push the game to overtime. She stopped all five shots faced in overtime, keeping the Wings alive long enough for teammate Erik Bradford to score the winner.

 

Right after the Wings scored the game-winning goal, Bradford and several other players rushed to swarm Fujimagari and celebrate her victory. Fujimagari was awarded the third star of the game for her performance in the overtime win over the Walleye.

 

Fujimagari was invited to play for the Wings on a pro tryout contract this preseason. The regular season starts for the Wings next week on October 21.

 

Last season, Fujimagari played for AIK in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL), appearing in 14 regular season games. In the past, she’s played for professional women’s hockey teams in North America such as the Connecticut Whale and Buffalo Beauts.

 

The Wings and Canucks renewed their affiliate agreement just prior to this season. The two organizations have had an on-and-off relationship for about 40 years now as they were first connected in 1984. Since then, Darren Archibald and Alexandre Grenier are just two examples of players who have managed to make their way from the Wings to the Canucks.

Overview

Vegas is on a 3-game skid and the Canucks look to make it 4 straight baby! Canucks own a sparkling 7-3-0 record against the Pacific Division and look to extend that to 8-3-0 in this the first of four games against the Knights this season. The Canucks are favored to win this by the odds makers in Vegas, but beating the Knights will be a tough row to hoe. Catching the Knights at this exact point in time might be a blessing (they are on a mini-skid) or a curse (they are on a mini-skid and itching to get back in the win column). 

 

Knights are missing a key defender, Shea Theodore and Martinez is banged up as well. Martinez may not play having missed the 5-4 SO loss to Edmonton and while I hope he doesn't for the Canucks sake, I do hope he is in the game for the same reason - have to be measured with a full yardstick to be considered a top team. 

 

To beat the Knights, the Canucks will have to up their 5-on-5 game and not rely just on their excellent Power Play to carry the day. The Canucks top players are starting to wake up again from varying degrees of slumber, looking at you Petey, but it will take the grit from Blueger, Joshua and the Angry Elf to chip in in order to beat the Knights. The bottom six players know that the NHL is a bottom-line business based on performance, economics and the club's long-term vision. All want to stay in Vancouver hence the general "motor-is-running" all the time for the bottom guys, especially the Blueger/Joshua/Garland line. 

 

“You feel for him quite a bit,” Blueger said regarding Beauvillier,  “It’s tough with going through it myself not that long ago. Your whole world gets flipped upside down. You mesh in with a group here and then you have to try and figure out the move and all the logistics that come with it. A lot goes into it, but it’s what you sign up for and a lot can happen at any time.”

Player to watch -> Ilya Mikheyev was seen at practice in full participation mode which is quite the feat given the Chaos Giraffe did his absolute best to break Mik's kneecap and knock him out of the lineup for the year with a laser of a slapshot last night.

Knights are 18th in the league in goals for (3.09 per game) and second in goals against (2.43)

 

Canucks have 91 goals for with 57 against for a differential of +34

Canucks are second in the NHL in goals for (3.96) and fourth in goals against (2.48)

 

LAST 10 GAMES:   Canucks: 5-5-0, averaging 3.2 goals, 5.8 assists, 3.4 penalties and nine penalty minutes while giving up 2.9 goals per game.

                                Golden Knights: 3-4-3, averaging 2.2 goals, four assists, 3.7 penalties and 9.1 penalty minutes while giving up 2.4 goals per game.

Interesting stat - the Canucks win the games where they take less penalty minutes than the opposition.

Apparently he was at the practice full on participating so may be in or a game time decision ... who knows ... if I was paid the big buck to make the call (clearly I am not), I would err on the side of caution if there is even a hint of discomfort.

Definitely one of the 2 or 3 games that helped me decide which 1/4 season pack to buy after getting home from the Dallas game earlier in the season.

 

So so very super stoked to watch this battle play out tomorrow night... then the Devils next week then start 2 weeks off work for my annual December chill leading up to the world juniors.
