The trade deadline is upon us, the Canucks have already made a significant addition in Lindholm but it's hard to say who will add what. It's an fascinating time of year to be sure. Unlike other seasons, the Canucks are a lock to make the playoffs, thus things will definitely be more interesting than usual.

Look for the Sens to maybe take on some bad but expiring cap from teams who fancy themselves playoff teams

They may as well shut him down for the season

Last night's game had Doughty become only the 35th D to ever put up 500 assists, Josi almost certainly be #36 given he's got 488. Pietrangelo probably gets there as well, he has 456.

Regarding the current crop of younger to prime aged top end D, some of which who will probably also break 500: Hughes has 273 in 345, Fox has 237 in 335, Makar has 232 in 294, McAvoy has 221 in 443, Dahlin has 218 in 414, Sergachev has 209 in 475, Werenski has 196 in 463, Heiskanen has 190 in 405, and Dobson has 145 in 297.

Crazy to think Hughes may be able to do it in around 600 games.

NJ honestly makes a lot of sense for a trade if Markstrom is willing to waive his NMC. With Markstrom clearly unhappy with how management has handled things this season it probably increases the likelihood he would waive.

NJ also apparently has $8M in cap space so there's no reason for Calgary to retain. Plus, NJ likely sends Vanecek the other way which covers a lot of the salary (and also gives Calgary someone who can still insulate Wolf even if Vanecek has had a rough season).

Calgary is in a weird situation. It seems like they're still trying to make the playoffs but their upcoming UFAs still don't want to re-sign. They really only have Hanifin as an upcoming UFA who is a difference maker left though now that Zadorov, Lindholm, and Tanev have all been traded.

If Jersey wins their games in hand they're right in the thick of it, if anything the Hughes injury is the reason they're not in a playoff spot, although them missing Hamilton has been huge too

Markstrom would be an upgrade certainly, you're also likely correct about them sending Calgary a tender back

@Miss Korea and I have gone back and forth about Calgary probably keeping Markstrom in order to insulate Wolf, but maybe Vanacek could do that in his stead

The wrinkle is Vanacek being on IR, but that could be a short term headache

Could very well depend on what Jersey is prepared to pay for such a swap

Devils are getting pounded by the Ducks lol

Which is good. They will sell by TDL.

I want Toffoli back.

Penalty shot awarded NJ with 2 secs left.

You could tell he was overthinking what to do and completely tightened up.

How bad does New Jersey needs a goalie?

They outshot Anaheim 55-14, scored 3 goals, and still lost in regulation.

I heard they’re interested in Markstrom and it makes sense.

Devils are done. Too many munchkin forwards.

NJD are a mess but I predicted this - that's what you happen when you let two of your top-4 defencemen leave in the off-season. They lose Severson and Graves and then Hamilton goes down to injury and has only played 20 games. That leaves their top 4 with two kids - Luke and Nemec, and then Siegenthaler and Marino.

I know Hughes and Nemec will be great eventually but they're getting eaten alive defensively. No real leader or veteran on that defence and they get destroyed. Sure, it doesn't help that they don't have a goalie helping them out.

Defence is IMO the single most important part of a team - a good veteran D makes any goalie look great (see Boston, Vegas) and a bad rookie D makes them look dreadful not to mention drags down the forward's production and makes them look bad. Stupid move by NJD to think they could cover up two veteran 20+ minute defencemen's minutes with two rookies in one year and then of course they lose their top guy to injury.

Load up your D and every other position looks better but sacrifice it and the forwards/goalie look trash.
