Canadian Men's Soccer

Japan is ranked #19 in the world.  Canada is ranked #44.

The "highlights" reflected that, I thought.      :classic_sad:

Ya, since beating the US in World Cup Qualifying, Canada has been rather sad against opposition ranked 30 or higher.  It's like this group fell off a cliff since then when playing competitive teams.  They are really going to need to improve if we will ever see our Men's national side win a match, or even get a draw in a World Cup.

Canada Soccer is completely broken from top to bottom at an organizational level.  It's just a big mess.  There's enough blame to go around twice over.  Everyone made little mistakes and it's all added up to a disaster.

Money.  Money is the biggest problem.

This will be put up or shut up.  The home/away vs Jamaica next month will be huge.  Playing in Copa America will give the boys some real, meaningful matches against real competition from teams outside CONCACAF.

Canada to face Jamaica in Nations League play for Copa America berth

Canada will face Jamaica next month in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, with a berth in the 2024 Copa America going to the winner of the two-legged series.

Canada, Mexico, the U.S. and Costa Rica were given byes to the final eight of the competition, based on the March 2023 CONCACAF rankings.

Panama, Jamaica, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago advanced via a qualifying round in the September and October international windows.

The 11th-ranked U.S. will play No. 98 Trinidad and Tobago while No. 12 Mexico faces No. 77 Honduras and No. 46 Costa meets No. 45 Panama.

Canada, ranked 44th, will visit No. 56 Jamaica on Nov. 17 with the rematch four days later at Toronto's BMO Field which was the site of another Canada-Jamaica matchup last month when the Canadian women won a two-legged Olympic qualifier to book their ticket to the Paris Games.

The winners move on to the CONCACAF Nations League finals next March, as well as securing their ticket to Copa America as guest teams at the South American championship.

The quarterfinal losers have a chance to join them, via a single-match elimination play-in in March that will decide the two remaining slots for CONCACAF entries.

The Canadian men have a 10-6-7 all-time record against the Reggae Boyz, clinching World Cup qualification last time they met in a 4-0 win in March 2022 at BMO Field.

Panama and Trinidad and Tobago finished 1-2 in the six-country League A Group A, with No. 90 Curaçao and No. 76 El Salvador relegated to League B after finishing in the bottom two. Jamaica and Honduras topped Group B with No. 87 Haiti and No. 173 Grenada relegated.

Jamaica finished with a 3-0-1 record, beating Honduras 1-0, Grenada 4-1 and Haiti 3-1. It also tied Haiti 2-2.

The four seeded countries were given the chance to decide whether they would play first at home or away. The two-legged series will be decided on aggregate score.

FIFA thought it was so much fun to not drink alcohol at the Qatar World Cup that they gave Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup.

Ya, Australia dropped out knowing they couldn't out bribe the Saudis.   Looks like another "Winter" world cup.  Awesome

The Canadian Men's Team plays Jamaica in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Nations League tournament.

The first leg, in Jamaica, is on Friday at 4pm.

The second leg, in Toronto, is on Tuesday Nov 21st at 4:30pm.

Insofar as this is only soccer and only involves our Men's national squad the games will not be available on network tv.  The games will be streamed on OneSoccer and, presumably, FUBO.

There is another wrinkle.  The winner of the home/away series against Jamaica will qualify for the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America in June.  The losers of these quarter finals series will also go to Texas for a qualification tourney in March played at the same time as the Nation League Finals to get a final spot.

CONMEBOL (South America) has 10 spots while CONCACAF has 6 spots for the tourney.  Lets hope the Men get in.  Would mean they get some serious games next year in the buildup to '26.

Nuts.

Now Canada has to play in the single elimination finals in Texas in March against the other QF losers to get in the Copa America

So, after blowing their chance to win a trophy in the Nations' League tournament, Canada still gets a chance to get into the Copa America tournament next year.

Canada will play another NL quarter-final loser - Trinidad and Tobago - on March 23, 2004 in Texas.  Winner of that game gets an entry into Copa America which takes place in June and July.

A team has to play better competition to get better.  Although I'm not sure how getting thumped by Brazil or Argentina can help Canada.  Nonetheless, I'd like to see them make the tournament.

So the Copa America draw has been held.

Should Canada beat Trinidad in March, they will be in a group with Argentina, Chile and Peru.

They would play the opening game of the tournament against Argentina in Atlanta.

(They say you can only get better by playing better competition.  So this is definitely a chance for the CMT to get better.)

CMNT's Tajon Buchanan makes a big move.  :towel:

Buchanan will be first Canadian to play in Serie A after completing transfer to Inter Milan

Should be good for him.

On a lighter note:

It'll be pretty easy for him to pick out his teammates at home.  Inter sports vertical striped black and blue like Club Brugge.

A possible upside to this story is that the Canadian National Teams' rights might be picked up by TSN or Sportsnet and more people will be able to watch their games.

A possible downside to this story is that the shortly upcoming Men's qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago and the start of the Canadian Championships might not be available for viewing anywhere. :classic_sad:

Dispute between Canadian Soccer Business and its media partner leads to legal action

Canadian Soccer Business and Mediapro, its media partner, have gone to court in a dispute that will have a major ripple effect on the sport in Canada.

Both sides are blaming each other for the breakdown. But the legal action essentially means CSB has taken back the broadcast rights to all its properties and is looking for new broadcast/media partners.
