It was a deliberate attempt to slash, after losing the puck battle.

 

Especially because it caught DeAngelo in the head.

I think they were equally stupid, but Kass's appeared to have far more force involved.

Oh yeah.  When you first mentioned this, I thought I remembered Gagner losing teeth.  Forgot it was as bad as it was.  Of course, he got 5 games.
