  1. Silovs has been good but not game-breaking. Meanwhile Demko is a proven elite goaltender. I like Silovs as much as the next fan, but I say we should play it safe and keep both of them for the time being.
  2. This is a good post, although I would argue that the housing crisis requires coordination between all levels of government now and that the federal side does have to make contributions monetarily--and probably do its best to dictate how these funds are spent such that the municipalities/provinces actually put them toward their intention. I'm someone who's highly reliant on social programs and so I'm in support of the NDP more than any other party. I understand voting in one's best interests and do get why a lot of people vote or will be voting Conservative, although I do think there are many vying to vote that way who are somewhat misled and don't realise what a Conservative government will do to them and their prospects of livelihood. If you're in a high tax bracket and can support yourself, it makes total sense to go that way, but some people aren't and probably don't quite get what/how much is going to be cut under a Poilievre rule that they rely on. They just know that they're angry and that this guy says he'll fix things. I'm not an economist and don't fully understand how national debt = bad, but I do trust that a Conservative government would be more 'responsible' in managing it. With that said, there will be a very real cost to people when those cuts are made.
  3. Minister Khera defends Canada Disability Benefit amid criticism Feds 'committed to doing more,' but minister offers no timeline for Canadian Disability Benefit boost https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/feds-committed-to-doing-more-but-minister-offers-no-timeline-for-canadian-disability-benefit-boost-1.6883122 I'm honestly very unhappy with this government right now. They raised hopes for the disabled-impoverished community and then failed to deliver anything significant to help. They said the mission of this benefit program was to lift people out of poverty, but it works out to a pittance of $200*month and is only available to people who receive the Disability Tax Credit--that is, it's only available to less than half of the total disabled demographic in the country. The Liberals had an opportunity to create a serious social program which takes meaningful action to lift millions of Canadians out of poverty, which would align with their promises in relation to the benefit, but now they're saving face by calling it a 'first step'--a first step people have been waiting years for already and one that only comes into force next July. I seriously doubt there are going to be any more steps taken here by this government before they're out. And then we'll have a Conservative rule which could not care less about bringing this program into a better state. I'm also somewhat disappointed by Singh/the NDP for supporting the budget after this farce. They did accomplish quite a bit with the pharma- and dental care and with the school lunch program, and I get that it's not an opportune time for the government to fall in the eyes of the NDP, but a lot of me really wishes that Singh put his fist down.
  4. I'm usually not one to complain about the officiating, but even I thought it was poor last game. The McDavid high stick was blatant. If that's called, I think we win the game. Per aspera ad astra... GCG! e: The Canucks are 0-8 in playoff games where Sutherland refs.
  5. Morality is objective. Philosophically it's highly difficult to demarcate a fetus from a human; and it's likewise difficult to separate potential for life from life itself.
  6. I didn't know this. Thanks. I guess progress isn't always linear. I think in a couple of decades there will be a large market for lab-grown meat. But today isn't tomorrow...
  7. but... why? does the cruelty make it taste better?
  8. MPs agree Canadian gov't should improve new disability benefit https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-disability-benefit-needs-to-be-safeguarded-from-clawbacks-mps-unanimously-agree-1.6876783 Last line of the article: "The budget implementation bill to enact this benefit is currently working its way through Parliament, providing the opportunity for amendments."
  9. I wish we could celebrate advancing without using name-calling such as "Predophiles" against a team which deserves better.
  10. Yes, that was my assumption. We absolutely don't have enough capacity in terms of beds and treatment facilities to do this to even a majority of drug users, though.
  11. "incarceration with treatment" does nothing but let people with impaired empathy enjoy a bit of schadenfreude.
  12. Do you have a source that the carbon tax is driving up food costs? I recall seeing an infographic that demonstrated its effects to be negligible, but I'm open to other information. What makes you think climate policy doesn't inform the tax? Most Canadians will get more money back from rebates than they will actually spend on the tax, for what it's worth. And I think Poilievre needs to do a better job of denouncing far-right activists and groups. I don't think it's moronic to suppose that. He did get close and personal with some questionable people and hasn't said a word about it.
  13. I'm going to purchase a Steam Deck once my tax return comes in (priorities). I haven't been able to play any of my games for a long time now after the tragic passing of my gaming laptop. And when I still had it, I was too depressed to play anything, so I have a lot of gaming to catch up on. I'm looking forward to Baldur's Gate 3, Valheim, some Civ 6, RDR2, and TES Online the most--all of which I have purchased. BG3 and Civ 6 are the only ones I have a decent chunk of hours in, and I haven't played the former since it was in early access. May's going to be a good month for me.
  14. In fairness, learning disabilities are independent of general intelligence, and a person who has one also has the benefit of working harder than other students to meet the same level of competence; hard work is in a way instilled in them better than someone who doesn't have a learning disability. My dad has dyslexia and dyscalculia/dysnumeria (not sure exactly, but he's not good with numbers), but I regard him as a generally intelligent person--certainly above average. He's able to talk at length and in good depth about politics, books he's read, media (film/TV he's followed), history, etc., and he's a very good artist. He also has a creative sense of humour, which is a mark of intelligence. I don't consider Trudeau inept at the Prime Minister's office because he struggles with mathematics; he has people around him who can step up if 13 and 14 come around looking for a fight. I consider him inept for other reasons.
  15. "Fool me nine times, shame on you..."
  16. I go back-and-forth on my view concerning people who use hard substances. On one hand, they often get into that lifestyle after a lifetime of abuse, suffering a broken family, and living entrenched in poverty. On the other hand, the message about how harmful hard drugs are is told to us all early and repeatedly, and starting down the path of using them is going very against common sense (and also respect for your fellow community members). The level of abjection the most unfortunate live in is difficult to witness, and they really are stuck in a cycle of withdrawals and use. In the sense of being an idealist, I would hope that it's possible to help everyone out of their situation if they're addicted, but being a realist, we just don't have the beds and money/other resources available for recovery for all. At the end of the day, I do look at people who use with a bit of scorn, but mostly I consider it a right to put whatever one wants into her body. Recriminalizing public use is kind of a mixed bag for me because in doing that you're pushing people to use in more isolated and therefore dangerous environments, and I really don't like seeing people die. I'm not in the DTES any longer and I don't witness much disorder personally, being a hermit in PG, so I don't have proper scope on how bad the problem has gotten, but I've seen a lot of the talk on the issue and know people are unhappy. I guess when I've seen it, public drug use hasn't really bothered me as much as the behaviours associated with it have. I've known a lot of folks who use or have used hard drugs, and they're still people like anyone else; some are very kind and affable. I don't have a solution to the epidemic, but I have liked the newer policies better than the old approach. I guess opening up more recovery centres would be where I'd look first--and for crime, offering judges the ability to remand people to such facilities.

He's played one, I believe. 0-0-0, .941sv%, 2.02GAA - ended up getting injured and had to leave the game in OT.

      DeSmith/Silovs tag team, we'll do fine.  I think.  :classic_ninja:

    4. undrafted

      undrafted

FWIW, apparently the oddsmakers don't think it's a big deal.  Even after DeSmith starting was announced, the odds didn't change much and VAN is still the favourite to win both tonight's game and the series 🤷‍♂️

  18. I watched the game with my dad. This season has been special for me because I haven't been able to watch games with him for a long time. I told him before the playoffs started that even if they don't fare well in the post-season that it's been a real treat with how they've played and to follow the team with him again. Hockey is one of the few activities that we've really bonded over across the years. Excitement-wise he thought the first two periods left something to be desired, but he said the third was the type of hockey he was expecting. The atmosphere in the building was electric; the arena hadn't been bumping like it was last night in a decade. I loved the chants throughout the game and the cheers when the Canucks scored. Those two goals twelve seconds apart were just incredible. There's not really any analysis in this post, but I just wanted to say how great it is to have playoff hockey return to Vancouver. 15 more wins!
  19. Why are you conflating this individual with mass murderers? https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychiatry/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.563860/full "For example, Choe et al. (15) reported numbers between 2 to 13% of violent offenses conducted by mentally ill vs. 20 to 34% of mentally ill who had been victims of violent crimes during the same period. Some studies suggest that perpetration is highly correlated with victimization in people with severe mental illness (14)."
