[GDT] Around the NHL [October 2023]

I got some feedback in the other thread, one of the suggestions was to create a mega thread of sorts and I think for now that's the right way to go, it takes a little longer but it only has to be done once. Maybe at some point we'll move back to it being a week to week thing. If at some point @Vintage Canuck joins us in a capacity similar to what we've grown used to he can take this thread back over, he's better about putting up the dates and who's playing than I'm probably committed to being. But until then I think this long tenured thread is worth keeping around for league wide discussion, which is why I thrown it up.

I can't guarantee I'll put it up on a month to month basis so if at any point one of you elects to throw one up towards the end of x month for the coming month that's totally chill. We're gonna have to do some of what Vintage used to take on in a more collaborative fashion. I'm not posting the remainder of the preseason games because I can't be bothered.

Some of the screenshots are harder on the eyes, my apologies. I'm not sure how Vintage managed to get the days with a large number of teams playing to be easier on the eyes.

Monthly Sign-Ups

We can always change how we format this going forward if there's enough feedback to push us back to week to week, we'll see how the monthly format works for people.

But in the meantime if anyone has interest in taking on November or December's monthly GDT I'll put your name down. I don't mind doing it but if someone else wants to jump in that's chill too. Maybe someone different does it each month and we just kinda source who does what a month or two in advance.

November

December

How to GDT

1. Copy and paste the header from this thread and slap it into your thread, Vintage always used it so I figure it's worth continuing

2. Write whatever you wanna

3. Maybe include existing monthly sign ups in the first or second post if that actually becomes a thing

4. Just screen shot the daily schedules and slap them into a spoiler similar to what I've done, you may have to adjust your resolution for game days that feature more teams playing, you can get all the week to week scheduling here https://www.nhl.com/schedule/2023-11-01

Avs may not want to go long term on Toews, no more than five years, problem is that bumps up the cap hit average. Toew's age seems to be a sticking point. All in all it makes sense.

Could hit free agency, but if he does he will not come cheap via cap hit or term, not after his past few seasons.

OEL with another 2 points and 20+mins 5 points in 2 preseason games avg over 20mins and looked decent defensively… let see how he does in the regular season.. maybe it’s just the Canucks that defenseman that was decent elsewhere looks horrible on the Canucks.. like Nate Schmidt and then after traded he looked good again

Watching the Pens, I think Karlsson won't score much under their more rigid system but he'll draw a lot of attention and that'll open up everyone else - nameley Letang. He's looked so good so far in preseason, forget about his injuries, if he plays a full season I think he'll be up for 20G and 80-90 points. Karlsson seems to be taking the point on the PP which leaves Letang as essentially a free forward on the left half boards almost and his vision looks as good as ever.

Regardless of how OEL does this season he wasn’t a fit playing with Hronek and we couldn’t afford a guy making over $7 million on the 3rd pairing.

Also, how would we have been able to sign Cole, Soucy, Suter and Blueger unless we bought out OEL?  We would have had to trade picks and prospects just to shed salary.

Our penalty kill will be alot better with the guys we acquired then just by keeping OEL.

The Sabres' Devon Levi is going to give me an ulcer this season.

The ups and downs of a young rookie goaltender are worse than a roller coaster.

One week nearly perfect, next week gets scored on like a cheap prostitute.

sure but i'm just saying this is another case of assuming OEL rebounds this year a player that was decent prior to vancouver struggles in vancouver and decent again once he leaves vancouver.. so maybe it's time for management and coaches to put players in roles that they excel in.. we have far too many players that comes to vancouver and all of a sudden they struggle.. we keep putting them in position where they are not used to or comfortable playing in.. OEL is never a shutdown defenceman.. he's basically a shutdown defenceman in vancouver.. i doubt he was the top PK defenceman either in his time in arizona.. OEL basically exchanged for cole and soucy. i think Cole looks fine so far but soucy i'm not sold on based on his preseason.. and i worried the same thing happens with soucy coz he's going to be playing in roles that is really not meant to be and will struggle like a lot of past players on the canucks.

same thing with hronek, when he was the top pair on the wings playing against the top competition he struggled.. then he was replaced by seider on the top pairing and he was great last year with the wings while seider started to struggle. he's going to be put in that role where he used to struggle on detroit he's going to be that top shutdown pair.. will it work remains to be seen. i'm actually leaning towards a hughes/hronek pair and let cole and whomever be the actual shutdown pair.. i personally think hronek will struggle if he's forced into the top shutdown role.. again a role that is not his style.

He played semi injured and then injured and still played. Its no surprise things went bad here. if hes healthy he will be good but if his foot takes another beating....not so much.
