Popular Post RWJC Posted October 12, 2023 Popular Post Posted October 12, 2023 Published 2 months ago but worth posting in new forum: Canucks’ Ian Cole announces he’s changing jersey numbers out of respect for Luc Bourdon Newly-signed Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ian Cole is changing his jersey number. On Friday, the Canucks announced the numbers for their three NHL free agent signings. Carson Soucy will wear number seven, Teddy Blueger will wear Bo Horvat’s old number 53, and Ian Cole was set to wear number 28, the number he’s worn for essentially the entirety of his professional career. But upon the announcement, some Canucks fans took issue with the fact that Cole’s 28 was last worn by the late Luc Bourdon, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident just three months past his 21st birthday. Cole was not made aware of the significance of the jersey number upon signing in Vancouver and didn’t take long to change his mind once the decision was made public. On Saturday afternoon, Cole announced that he’ll be wearing number 82 next season instead. Here’s what the veteran defenceman had to say in a statement released by the team: “When I signed with the Vancouver Canucks, I was asked what number I wanted. I responded that I would love to wear #28, the number I’ve worn on my jersey since I was 12 years old and basically my whole professional career. When the selection was made public, I found out the significance of the number. While I did not know Luc nor did I know he wore #28 with the Canucks, I certainly remember his heartbreaking story and tragic passing. Out of respect to him and to honour his memory I have decided to change my jersey number to #82.” Cole will become the second Canuck in history to wear number 82, as the first and last player prior to Cole was Nikolay Goldobin, who wore the number in 2017 before switching to number 77 the following season. Cole signed a one-year deal with the Canucks at a cap hit of $3 million on the first day of free agency earlier this month following a strong year with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Analyst82 Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Class act! The guy has been to the playoffs so many times! He can teach our young guys a thing or two! Quote
Provost Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 You could certainly see the quality of the guy on the ice last night. He and Hronek were miles above Myers and the kids. 1 1 Quote
MeanSeanBean Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 "Free agent signing Ian Cole is the Canucks’ union representative with the NHLPA and he told Postmedia's Patrick Johnston that the Canucks’ support for Pride Night and other community initiatives was a big reason why he signed in Vancouver." Between this and the number change, Cole seems like a solid dude. I'm a fan. 1 1 Quote

Cole is a much better player than I thought he was when we signed him. He works so well with Myers - they are a solid 2nd pair. Hughes with Hronek gives us a dominant 1st pairing. If we can find a way to bring Bear back I think he would work great with Soucy and give us more options to mix things up. I don’t mind Juulsen -I think he can he can handle a 3rd pairing assignment fine and is physical. I was surprised to see he averaged 19:25 TOI in his rookie season with decent results Edited October 12, 2023 by Canucklehead44 1 Quote

Biff Tannen Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Obviously good that he changed numbers and I wouldn't blame Cole for not knowing, but isn't it a bit weird that no one on the staff flagged it up before the initial annoucement? I missed this in the other place, so maybe it's already been gone over. Quote

The league backed off mandating participation, mandating non-participation should be met with the same social backlash. What is the league going to do, make teams forfeit games? That would be spectacular headlines on every major media broadcast on the continent. Quote
