Betting - how does it work?

How are they shady?  Enlighten me.  Especially about Play Now run by the BC Government.

BCLC generated $1.6 Billion net income in 2022. That's a lot of money, and of course the government is happy to have a monopoly on it. Gambling/casinos are one of the main ways foreign money is being laundered in Canada. That and real estate. Just because the government owns something doesn't mean it can't be shady.

I have done decently with 'in game' bets. Particularly in the NFL. You essentially wait for a team to go down then bet they will come back to win. As soon as the Chiefs went down a touchdown, I'd bet on them to come back to win the game with better odds than I would have gotten pre-game. I like to bet on NHL playoff series (eg. Canucks in 6, or xx team to comeback to win a series after going down 1-0). NHL game bets are pretty unpredictable. But again, I will ride ~$50 for NHL and NFL playoffs, large international soccer tournaments, and some pre-season NHL and NFL bets. I miiight spend $150 per year, if that. It's just for fun.

The bet - money you no longer care about or need as it will likely be departing from your possession.

The odds - an old Vancouver based rock group

The pros - depends on one’s perspective. It is either a.) the people you are betting on. Or. B.) the people who take your bet

The cons - probably the people you will end up living with.

i hope I was of some help. Carry on….

I had a friend many years ago who was obsessed with horse racing and betting on horses. He had some big wins and even bought himself a racehorse, but it took over his whole life. We would always hear about the wins, but never about the losses.

After a while the losses built up and he lost his business, his house, and his marriage.

If you're going to get into gambling you need willpower. Know when to quit, and never go beyond what you can easily afford.

Yes be careful with gambling of any type. As others have said, if you’re going to do it treat it like entertainment and only bet money you can afford to lose.

My dad had been living alone for years and phoned me one day to ask for money. I found out he had been going to a casino for a while and started losing money, then got in the trap of believing he could make back his losses by betting more. He was lonely and depressed but he never told me what was going on.

Long story short, he gambled away his condo, his pension and had maxed out a bunch of credit cards. I found out about the details after he got health issues and took his own life.

If you’re going to gamble put a limit on it and don’t be afraid to ask for help if it starts to go sideways.

Why is it that we never hear a near legendary local band like the odds on the in game playlist? My two teenage boys love guitar pop/rock and think they’re cool.

Agreed.  And I would add - keep track of your gambling amounts.   It's easier to remember the $100 you won on a $20 bet than the seven $20 bets you lost.  After a while, your win/loss balance might tell you something important.

the only sports bet i make each year is the coin flip in the superbowl.. can't be scripted and it's either heads or tails can't be influence by the league unless the ref master the art of flipping a coin. the anthem singing duration i wonder if some betting company secretly pays off the singer to sing a few seconds longer or shorter depending on which side have more money lol.. or a friend of friends tell them to sing x amount of seconds XD

Only someone with a mental deficiency would use PlayNow.com. Make a mistake placing a bet (it's easy to do) and any other sportsbook will let you cancel it for free (provided the event has not begun). Playnow will ding you 10% of your bet to cancel. Playnow consistently has the worst odds of any sportsbook.

Playnow is good for buying lottery tickets and that's about it.

As for normal betting, if you're making random guesses you're going to lose. If you want to give yourself the best chance using analytics is a good approach and multiple books to get the best odds. You'd be surprised how much the odds can differ site to site.

LOL.....I have never made a mistake betting on games.  I used to have accounts with 3 different books.  I prefer Play Now and getting my money the next day directly into my bank account.  I don't know any bettors who make random guesses.  If they are they should not be betting.

There are some good cappers on this site.

Last question first. Not that I have detected. 🙂

Most people have made errors betting on games especially if you're using a phone to place bets. Very easy to fat finger an error. Most recreational bettors have little rhyme or reason to their decisions apart from a hunch. Same as a lot of people have little rhyme or reason to their lives.

If Playnow works for you that's great but in exchange for getting your money quickly you're taking worse odds and making less than you could for the same wagers. I have never once seen the best available odds on Playnow.

Lots of good cappers on Twitter/X. Of course you do have to wade through a lot of crap to find them.

'Turns out Americans don't know @#$% about hockey, so why bet on their site?"

I don't gamble, other than a very seldom lotto ticket however:

If they don't know about hockey, isn't there a greater chance that they screw up the odds, and thus a better chance of the bettor making money?

My reasoning after 2 seconds of not so deep thinking

If anything, if they truly are ignorant about the game, then one would expect a random dispersion of their bets - thus (and I'll be the first to admit I'm not a stats guy, so feel free to correct me) in the long run, I would think it would result in about the same odds as if they abstained completely.

The other nice thing about Play Now is security of your funds.
