A man who fatally shot a 20-year-old woman after the SUV she was riding in mistakenly drove into his rural driveway in upstate New York was sentenced Friday to more than 25 years to life in prison.

Kevin Monahan, 66, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death last April of Kaylin Gillis. She was riding in a caravan of two cars and a motorcycle that was trying to leave after pulling into Monahan's long, winding driveway while looking for a party at another person's house in the town of Hebron.

Michelini scolded Monahan for showing no remorse.

“You murdered Kaylin Gillis. You shot at a car full of people and you didn’t care what would happen and you repeatedly lied about it. You deserve to spend the maximum time in prison allowable under the law,” the judge said.

Prosecutors had asked for the maximum. The defense asked for leniency. Monahan declined an opportunity to speak. And then he was led away, to applause and a shout of “coward” from the gallery.

Defense attorneys said they would appeal.

Yet another example of a government reacting to a mass-shooting by changing gun laws.  Yet, school shooting after school shooting in the US results in thoughts and prayers.  Sad.

Hopefully, this sends a message to parents who have a lax attitude towards guns when it comes to their kids:

The parents of the teenager who killed four students in the 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, were each sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison, weeks after being convicted of manslaughter.

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who each had faced up to 15 years in prison, have already been imprisoned for over two years since their arrest in a Detroit warehouse days after the shooting. Though they were tried separately, their sentencing took place together in an Oakland County courtroom.

They are the first parents to be held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting committed by their child as the nation continues to grapple with the scourge of gunfire on campus.

Zero sympathy for these two....

A 10-year-old boy awoke to find his parents and three brothers dead in their southwest Oklahoma City home, all fatally shot by his father, police said Tuesday.

On Monday morning, “(the boy) woke up and discovered what had happened,” said Sgt. Gary Knight, describing the scene as “carnage.”

Police believe Jonathan Candy, 42, killed his wife, 39-year-old Lindsay Candy, and sons 18-year-old Dylan Candy, 14-year-old Ethan Candy and 12-year-old Lucas Candy, Knight said. He said Jonathan Candy then turned the gun on himself.

Knight said investigators believe the shooting began after an argument between the parents late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

“At some point he (Jonathan Candy) armed himself with a gun, he shot her multiple times, killing her,” Knight said. “At that point he systematically went through the home shooting and killing the children.”

I've made this point many times and it always gets pushback by gun "enthusiasts", but the fact remains: A gun in the home is far more likely to be used against a family member than it is an intruder.

Now this poor kid is an orphan, thanks to his POS father and this American predilection for ending arguments with bullets.....:classic_dry:

If you ever feel the urge to kill someone, because they're protesting a cause you disagree with, Texas is the place for you:

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Thursday issued a pardon for Daniel Perry, an Army sergeant who was convicted of murder for fatally shooting a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protester in 2020.

In April, a jury found Perry guilty of murdering Garrett Foster during a July 2020 protest in Austin, Texas. The jury did not find him guilty of an aggravated assault charge.

Perry was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and Abbott asked the state’s parole board to review the case in an expedited manner. Perry’s conviction and sentencing have angered conservatives, who say he was acting out of self-defense.

The board, which is appointed by the governor, announced its unanimous recommendation to pardon Perry, and Abbott’s proclamation followed, The Associated Press reported.

In a statement Thursday, the governor said Texas has one of the strongest “Stand Your Ground” laws of self-defense.

The proclamation grants Perry a full pardon and “restoration of full civil rights of citizenship.” Abbott thanked the review board for its unanimous decision.

Perry, who is white, was convicted of killing 28-year-old Garrett Foster, who was white and an Air Force veteran, during a 2020 protest after demonstrations began nationwide in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.

Perry was working as an Uber driver and dropped a passenger off in downtown Austin. He was attempting to move his car through a crowd when he said Foster, who was legally armed, aimed his rifle at him.

Perry also legally had a gun on him and fired the pistol at Foster because he feared for his life.

Prosecutors argued that Foster did not raise his rifle at Perry. Evidence produced in court revealed that Perry shared racist content in private messages, including a reference to BLM protesters as animals at a zoo.

Note the part about the board being appointed by the Governor....

One has to wonder if the "Stand your ground" law would have stood, had this incident happened at a Trump rally.....:classic_dry:
