Pretty much. It's just part of regular American life now.

Whenever I go to the US it is unnerving to know that a good chunk of the population is packing heat, or have a gun in the glove compartment. Freedom run amok.

I predict calls for not politicizing this.  Let the people grieve.

Except there won't a time because the next one will happen.

If a bunch of dead elementary school students getting killed didn't change things, little will.  Hell, a bunch of country music fans got shot up and that didn't change things.

Sad.

"Thoughts & prayers" ☹️

Jebus right wing fanatics can't even be bothered with the "thoughts" part just "prayers".

Thoughts require a functioning brain. collectively the likes of MJ, Cruz, MTG Bobo, Gaetz, DeSantis etc. there's probably 5 functional brain cells between the entire group

Totally agree with the sentiment, but unfortunately DeSantis is really quite smart.   That's what makes him so dangerous.  Cruz & Gaetz are somewhat clever too and about as dangerous.   MTG & Bobo are the clear winners for the dumb and dangerous prizes.  MJ I'm still trying to figure out.  Seems dangerous though.

We all know the US definition of mass shooting.  They also have defined what a mass KILLING is.  If we go by the more extreme mass killing standard, the US had 4 a month or just under once a week as we are in week 43 of the year.  36 mass killings.

The shooting was the country’s 36th mass killing this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 190 people have died in those killings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people have died within a 24-hour period, not including the killer — the same definition used by the FBI.

So, I guess now that we have a clear cut case where someone with mental health issues perpetrated a mass killing, the QOP is going to push for improve funding for mental health.  They are going to champion treatment for mental healthcare.

Just kidding, we all know that the only thing they are going to champion is thoughts and prayers while they try to gut programs like Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security and then slash taxes for their rich buddies.

...then hand out more military weapons to the masses, only leading to more thoughts and prayers.

Lot's of folks on Elon's speed dial.

Musk sullied F1’s COTA race with his presence, but he was there with his son, so I give some leeway doing dad stuff. His piece of shit truck was also being featured, so not sure what the actual impetus of him being there was.

When they say some gun control measures, they are

Maine's yellow flag law only allows law enforcement members to make a similar petition and they must take the person into protective custody before the petition is made, according to the law. The law also mandates a medical evaluation before the case can be presented to a judge.

and

Maine does not have a secure storage law that mandates firearms be stored in a locker or similar secure device. However, it recently amended its laws to attempt to prevent children from gaining possession of a loaded weapon.

In 2021, Maine's state legislature passed a child endangerment law that, among other things, makes it a crime to leave a loaded firearm unsecured in the presence of a child under 16 years of age.

The gun owner has three options to abide by the law: store the weapon in "a locked box, locked gun safe or other secure, locked space"; have the weapon "stored or left in a location that a reasonable person would believe to be secure"; or secure the firearm with "a trigger lock or similar device that prevents the firearm from discharging," according to the law.

Other than that, Maine has pretty lax gun laws.  They are about the best NRA wet dream of a state.

From CNN's John Miller, Evan Perez and Josh Campbell

Robert Card, the suspect in the Lewiston, Maine, shooting rampage, is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, multiple sources tell CNN.

Card was found in the woods near Lisbon, which is about eight miles from Lewiston, the same three sources said. He was found in an area near the recycling center from which he had been recently fired, a law enforcement source told CNN’s John Miller.

Police have been searching for Card since the shootings on Wednesday evening.

A news conference will be held at 10 p.m. ET.
