Canadiens’ Kirby Dach Out Long-Term With Lower-Body Injury

October 16th, 2023 at 10:39am CST • By Josh Erickson

Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach is expected to miss “significant” time with a lower-body injury, Sportsnet’s Eric Engels reports. Dach sustained the injury in Saturday’s win against the Chicago Blackhawks after he was on the receiving end of a large hit from Blackhawks defenseman Jarred Tinordi.

Dach, 22, looks like a future top-six fixture for the Habs – if he can stay healthy. He recorded 14 goals, 24 assists and 38 points in 58 games in 2022-23 – his first season in Montreal – a career-high pace of 54 points in a full season. The 2019 third-overall pick of the Chicago Blackhawks logged two assists through his first two games this season, but it appears he’ll need to wait a while to add to that total.

Dach missed 16 games at the tail end of last season with another lower-body injury. In his absence, another young forward on the cusp of a breakout, Alex Newhook, will center the team’s second line. Montreal acquired Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche this summer in exchange for a first- and second-round pick as well as defense prospect Gianni Fairbrother.

Montreal hopes this isn’t a sign of things to come. The team lost over 600 man-games to injury last season, believed to be an NHL all-time record. For a team hyper-focused on the development of their young core, this is far from an ideal situation.

With Dach out of the lineup, look for the Habs to place him on injured reserve and make a corresponding recall of a forward from AHL Laval. They now have just 12 healthy forwards on the roster.

It's disappointing. The Dach/Newhook/Slafkovsky line looked really dangerous together.  Dach was a perfect C to help Slafkovsky develop.  Newhook will slide into Dach's spot until Dvorak is healthy. Then I assume we'll see Monahan move to 2C and Newhook will go back to the wing

Oh god it's MTL 22-23 all over again

They can't catch a break.  Montreal has set records for man games lost to injury in each of the past 2 seasons.  Losing Dach for the season pretty much guarantees another bottom 5 finish

As badly as this new Hab management group for the Habs have messed up their top picks (pretty clearly busts with both) they have done the opposite with their trades, especially the Dach one. Dach was looking like a steal. It’s too bad he has a bad injury. But even so he will get better and the Habs will still have a young, high end centre. Dach is really good.

Not a single chance in hell of getting him (beyond the ridiculous and obvious that would never happen)

and yeah, I know. The question was posed what do we want and I provided my singular Xmas wish from Santa.

Beau for a 2nd rounder?

They don't need a winger.  They have several They can call up from laval.   Most likely they'll slide Newhook over to C on the second line or move Monahan up to the second line.  Dvorak is skating and should be back in the lineup soonish.  I imagine they'll ride out the injury rather than taking on a guy like Beauvillier

Montreal only has 2 right shot D on the roster.  Moving one for a redundant winger when they lost a 2C makes zero sense

Barron’s not ready yet?

Fair enough…they also have Pearson for the bottom six at a higher salary

Barron is in Laval. He didn't have a great camp.  Needs a bit more seasoning, Pearson looks great on the third line with Monahan and Gallagher.  If they move Monahan up to 2C then Evans will move up to 3C and they can call up someone from Laval for 4C

Appreciate the Habs expertise @qwijjibo. Cheers!

Just reading up on the Montréal  insiders.  Sounds like they may move Harvey-Pinard up to the top line with Caufield and Suzuki. Move Anderson down to the second line with Slafkovsky with  Newhook in the middle.  Then they can bring  someone like Joshua Roy up from Laval
