2024-25 Cap Projected For 87.7M

Recommended Posts

I feel like this must have been posted already but can’t find it.

an extra 4.2M certainly wouldn’t hurt getting Hronek and Petey done. Especially if they can shed Garland.

I mean, it helps the value of our existing contracts.  It's not going to help us stay under the cap with our upcoming free agents.

Obviously Pettersson and Hronek will want a little bit more now that they know the cap is going up by that much.  But it makes Hughes and Miller dirt cheap, and lessens the deadweight of the OEL contract.

I'd say we can easily fit everyone in, the question is, who do we keep. Myers and Cole are big question marks - they're obviously quite old, do we keep them on a cheap 1-2 year deal or just look into free agency? They play big minutes for us. Obviously Zadorov has to be re-signed around 4ish mil hopefully. Hronek is one of the best defencemen in the league, there was talk of 6M in the off-season but he deserves 7M now (it helps having Hughes at 7.8M - surely no one on that blueline can earn more than him).

Then the other question is what about our bottom-6, we've got a chance to keep our current guys who have done well (Lafferty, Blueger, Joshua) or do we let them go if they ask for too much if they pad their stats a bit more and let kids come in to play bigger minutes (is Raty ready?), or get a solid 3C in UFA?

I think we'll easily be able to re-sign Petey and Hronek to big deals but the question is, what do we do with our depth - keep our current guys or look elsewhere? All depends on how the rest of the season and playoffs unfold I'd say. Defence is the main spot where we might see lots of turn around.

Exactly ........ the cap going up means nothing other than players, especially top end players, are going to get more $.

Ok spreadsheet time...

Notes:

- Gave benefit of the doubt to EP40 that his game will take off again in the 2nd half and he becomes the 5th highest paid player in the entire NHL

- Hronek also becomes one of the highest paid (top 15) defencemen in the entire NHL

- Zadorov gets a raise

- Garland is still traded.  We need the cap space to solidify our 2nd pair on defence

- Cole is not re-signed.  Instead we sign or trade for a solid 2nd pairing RHD as stop gap solution as we await Willander

- Myers or equivalent is re-signed for 3rd pairing duties

- Podkolzin and Karlsson get their shot, and Hoglander finally moves into a top 6 role

- In 2 years, we have cap leftover to re-sign Hogs to top 6 dollars

TLDR:  We're in good shape assuming we trade Garland between now and the start of next season.  That includes a significant Petey and Hronek raise.

Yup, a rising cap doesn't necessarily mean the Canucks will have more cap space to fit other players in, more than likely it just means the players they need to extend will be asking for more. Player asks rise alongside the cap, so do their contracts.

Given how sports and society works, it will just mean the higher end players get more the middle class will continue to shrink.

Absolutely, top end players always eat up larger chunks of cap increases. If anything this will bolster what Pettersson and Hronek can ask for. It's not the job of players to manage the cap of the teams they play for, it's the job of their agents to secure them the largest bag possible.

https://canucksarmy.com/news/analyzing-nikita-zadorovs-potential-as-a-top-four-defender-the-vancouver-canucks

"The recently-promised increase to the NHL’s salary cap that just might make the most positive impact on the franchise long-term, because it couldn’t be coming at a better time for the Canucks.

At this week’s Board of Governors meetings, the NHL announced an estimated salary cap increase for the 2024/25 season, moving from the current $83.5 million up to $87.675. That’s a difference of $4.175 million, which might not sound like a lot, but is for a couple of different reasons...”

Good article, it's going to be tight for the Canucks but not impossible. Especially if players like Bains can make the jump on cheap ELCs.

I think if Lafferty keeps up his current play he'll be due a raise, say 1.5-2M.

Think we should be able to get Zadorov down to 4M if he keeps up this 18 minute a night play.

Think Hronek cannot possibly go over Hughes just out of principle so maybe we get him at 7.5M even though he's surely worth 8.

Blueger should be similar, hasn't blown anyone out of the park, and Petey is in a bit of a quiet stretch so maybe his number comes down? I think you're right though, he probably ends up landing on 11.5M.

Defence is key - our 2RD should be around 4-5M. Doubt it's Cole though, maybe someone in free agency but all those guys are monsters who will get far more. 3RD I think we can get down to 2-3M, whether it be Cole or Myers. I'd be quite happy with Cole at 2M for our 3rd pairing with Soucy, let Myers walk but then we need a solid 2RD to play with Zadorov (who is basically a 4-5th overall guy).

Trading Garland will be difficult for sure and rotating the defence won't be easy but Allvin has shown he's got some balls to make big moves.
