[RUMOUR] Jonatan Berggren on the trade block

Red Wings reportedly shopping upside prospect (msn.com)

The Red Wings have been shopping 2018 second-round pick Jonatan Berggren in recent trade discussions, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports. After scoring 15 goals in his rookie campaign last season, Berggren has been ferried between Detroit and AHL Grand Rapids this year and has played just four games for the Red Wings.

Jonatan Berggren Scouting Report: 2018 NHL Draft #33 - Last Word On Hockey (lastwordonsports.com)

Berggren is an outstanding skater. He is very fast, and reaches top speed in just a few strides. This can create breakaways and other odd man rushes. He is dangerous taking a defender wide on the rush. He also gets in quickly on the forecheck. Berggren has a low centre of gravity, and is difficult to move off the puck as a result. Despite his size, he is effective in board battles and in front of the net. His agility and edgework are also strong. Berggren is able to beat defenders with quick movements and cuts.

Berggren may be small, but he plays a heavy game. He is a torpedo on the forecheck, getting in quickly on opposing defenders and forcing them to turn the puck over. He also battles hard on the boards and gets to the front of the net and causes havoc. Berggren is not afraid to take a hit to make a play, or to take abuse in front of the net. He scores most of his goals in tight to the net. He has the soft hands to finish on breakaways that he generates with his speed. Berggren also has the hand-eye coordination and quickness to pounce on rebounds.

This guy is Nils Hoglander only a much better skater.  He literally can fly on the ice.  And he's Swedish too.  I'd be all over getting Berggren.  He could be a fit with Petey...

Probably have to wait a bit for any trade to happen now. They could use him, with Perron getting an in-person DoPS hearing, and who knows how long Larkin's going to be out for. But yes please.

Looks like Berggren and Hronek were playing some beautiful music together, especially on the PP.  Maybe they can do the same here.

Apparently, Detroit is looking to make a bigger deal including Berggren.  Maybe we can do a Kuzmenko for Berggren + type deal.  Allvin can fleece Detroit one more time.

Perron might be out for awhile, same with Larkin.  Allvin, is always looking for a team in distress, then he pounces like a shark...

Plus, we take a future 'Canuck Killer' out of rotation. 3 goals in 2 games against us last season.

A shit disturber around the net, with high IQ and blazing speed?

Absolutely would be awesome here. I wonder if PA could fleece the Wings again haha.

Not sure how the trade is seen as a fleece. It's a 1st round pick AND a 2nd round pick (high pick because of Vancouver's low standings) for Hronek a 2nd round pick. This is by definition selling high. At best, it's a fair trade that's working well for both teams.

Well in the last two threads we have traded for Larsson and Berggren who both played for Skelleftea.

… I guess we know what NHL team that town will be rooting for!  We need to be on the Sweden trip next year. 😄

If we could somehow convert Garland and Kuzmenko in to Larsson and Berggren +/-....

How exactly does this trade work as well for the Wings and Islanders as us? Fish in another pond. Ours is closed.

We gave them the Islanders pick not our own. It was the 17th overall.

We’ll see what Hronek re-signs for but we’re talking about a point a game number 2-3 D man. Maybe not a fleece but a very good trade for us. It’s right up there with the Toews for two 2nds Colorado pulled off.

The 2nd round pick - and I should clarified this - was our own. It's basically a late first rounder, given how poorly we did last season.

He looks solid.  This must be a fake rumour.

The Detroit Red Wings have been involved in trade discussions of late, and those talks may have escalated recently, according to TFP’s David Pagnotta.

As Pagnotta reported Sunday evening via X, one of the players the Red Wings have been discussing in some of their recent trade calls is young forward Jonatan Berggren, who is currently playing with Detroit’s AHL affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffins.

It is unclear if a trade is imminent, but multiple sources have confirmed Berggren’s been brought up in trade talks with multiple teams over the last couple of weeks.

Pagnotta also indicated that Berggren, Austin Czarnik and Zach Aston-Reese are expected to be called up from the AHL on Monday and could join the Red Wings in Dallas ahead of their game against the Stars, but that does not have an affect on trade discussions.

The #LGRW have been engaged in trade talks lately, per source. Jonatan Berggren, who was scratched in today's Grand Rapids game (that is still ongoing), is one of the players believed to be in recent discussions.

It is also unknown as to the type of trade the Red Wings are exploring, or which teams may be involved. However, two sources told TFP on Sunday the Montreal Canadiens and Wings have had recent trade talks, though it has not been confirmed if Berggren was a topic of discussion.

The club has just over $4.378 million in salary cap space, according to CapFriendly, and that figure will continue to increase with each passing day leading up to the March 8 trade deadline.

Berggren, 23, is in the final year of a three-year, $2.775 million contract. He registered 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in 67 games with the Wings last season and has one assist in four games with Detroit this season.

In 16 games in the AHL this season, so far, Berggren has registered five goals and 10 assists for 15 points.

Why is Detroit shopping him given all of his positive attributes?

I guess it's more accurate to say mid 2nd. Regardless, trading away picks has been a theme with this team. I do acknowledge that Hronek has been a good pickup, but it is certainly not a fleece.

A 1st and a 2nd, for a top 2/3 RHD, who was 25 years old when we acquired him, who is a perfect compliment for Huggy, and point a game, minute muncher IS a fleece. It's a lopsided win for us.

If you don't think so, what would your offer be for a coveted D like Hronek? Raymond, Ballard, and a 2nd??? 🙄

I don't know if he plays with enough pace and willingness to go into the hard areas of the ice. Has stellar playmaking ability and can make small area passes onto the stick of his teammates and has a very underrated shot.

However, he tends to keep his feet sorta stagnant. He profiles to be a good skater, but doesn't exactly use it to his advantage though. Lots of Red Wing fans say he has game breaking skill, but not sure his motor or defensive smarts allows him to excel in that regard. Eerily sounds familiar to Nikolay Goldobin and currently right now Kuzmenko.

We need another gritty 3rd /fourth liner that could play on the second line.

Also a trade to get another RHD.

To me this is the perfect time to get either and maybe this is the one but I doubt it.

What do they want back???

CBJ want more scoring so I would call see what they have to maybe get both in a trade.

Who they want back would depend on whether Larkin is out or not.  If Larkin is out, they need a center badly.  We don't have that.  If Larkin is not out and coming back soon, they need better defence and goaltending.  We don't really have a surplus of that either.

We don't have what they need.  We have wingers, and it makes little sense for Detroit to dump a winger and acquire a new one.

Hronek was originally a 2nd round pick and developed.

The Canucks traded a 1st round pick AND a 2nd round pick.

It's not a fleece by that definition.
