My generation too.   I think you are pointing out the polarizing bit.   He did some good, did some bad.

He & Nixon had to get out of Vietnam or Nixon would have never won another election.   They were kinda shady in the way they went about it.

Relations with China was good, as was the Egypt/Israeli peace treaty.    He won the Peace Prize but his Vietnamese co-winner refused it as he said there was not yet peace in Vietnam. (there wasn't.)

One of his most recent bads was to say that Ukraine should just cede land to Russia and stop the war.   That one really pissed me off and reignited my hippy days dislike for the guy.

He won the 1973 Peace Prize for ending U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War but it was one of the most controversial ever. Two members of the Nobel committee resigned over the selection as questions arose about the secret U.S. bombing of Cambodia. ..... From Reuters.

It wasn't long after "he and Nixon got the USA out of Vietnam" that Cambodia the nation he purposely weakened was taken over by General Pol Pot who enacted a wholesale genocide that saw upwards of 25% of the Cambodian population (2 million human beings) murdered.

Makes me physically ill to see people singing his praises. If there is a Hell he's surely roasting as we speak. Even though this is a new site where swearing is apparently tolerated I try not to. But I will make an exception. Fuck this asshole straight to the depths of Hell.

Kissinger takes a lot of criticism for the bombing of Cambodia. I doubt he was making military decisions but the strategic point probably being that the Vietnamese army was using Cambodia to transfer troops and supplies into South Vietnam. Bombing Cambodia prevented much of that and might have influenced the Vietnamese willingness to negotiate a peace deal. Kissinger counselled against any idea that the USA could succeed in creating a functioning democracy in Iraq.

I agree with your point about his Ukraine comments. He was a big detente guy.  Was it a very old man trying to stay relevant or someone using him for whatever purpose. I think he was still on the Board at Harvard. I think he did far more good than bad.

I realize this is just your opinion which you are certainly entitled to but what a grotesque statement. 🤮

Actually one of the failings in Vietnam was the White House doing exactly that to a micro management level with sand tables and all. So he may very well have had some input. He did some bad shit and did some good. Like most with that level of power in that nation.

I was reading some stuff recently about what happened to Bengalis in what’s today Bangladesh.

Never realized that Kissinger was one of the “backers” of the Pakistan’s regime back them.

Plus what Indonesia did in East Timor was just atrocious, not to mention supporting Pinochet regime, Argentina junta, indiscriminate bombing of Cambodia etc. I generally don’t like to speak bad about the dead, but being involved in these ghoulish events, sure doesn’t help one’s reputation.

Myles Goodwyn, former April Wine singer, dead at 75

Story by Richard Woodbury

Nova Scotia musician Myles Goodwyn, who stepped down earlier this year as the singer of April Wine, died Sunday.

The 75-year-old's death was confirmed by his publicist, Eric Alper.

The cause of death is unclear.

Goodwyn, who lived in the Halifax area, achieved many feats with April Wine, including selling more than 10 million albums worldwide and receiving 11 Juno nominations. April Wine was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame earlier this year. Goodwyn was also inducted this year into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He told CBC News earlier this year that the latter induction was his proudest achievement.

"This one's for me, and songwriting is what I care for most of all…. I think, probably, I stayed in the business because of songwriting," he said. "I'm not the greatest singer, the greatest guitar player. I'm not the greatest songwriter either, but I took great pride in being able to write songs that were popular."

April Wine songs such as Tonite Is a Wonderful Time to Fall in LoveOowatanite and Just Between You and Me are an essential part of Canadiana.

While Goodwyn fronted April Wine for more than five decades, his last show with the band was March 2 in Truro, N.S. He continued to be involved with the group, helping manage the band and writing material for a new album.

Goodwyn told CBC earlier this year that he was tired of travelling in airports and living out of a suitcase.

"The lifestyle is not healthy for me anymore," said Goodwyn, who had diabetes.

Previous health issues

In 2008, he was hospitalized after he collapsed on his way to a Quebec airport. Alcohol abuse had taken its toll; Goodwyn had internal bleeding and nearly died.

After months of rehab, Goodwyn said he realized there were things he wanted to do, such as write an autobiography, Just Between You and Me, which was released in 2016, and put out a blues album, Friends of the Blues.

One of the songs on that album was called I Ain't Gonna Bath In the Kitchen Anymore, an autobiographical tune that referenced childhood details such as the lack of running water at their Waverley, N.S., home and hitchhiking to church on Sundays.

While Goodwyn was born in New Brunswick, he was raised in Nova Scotia. He also lived in Quebec for decades.

Goodwyn told CBC earlier this year that he wasn't ready to truly retire.

"I still don't want to give all that up," he said. "I can't imagine the day when I don't do these things."

RIP. One of my favourite bands as a youngster discovering music.
