[Speculation] Carolina Takes Brett Pesce Off Of Trade Block

Carolina Takes Brett Pesce Off Of Trade Block

September 20th, 2023 at 8:32am CST • By Gabriel Foley

In his recent 32 Thoughts article, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared that Brett Pesce is no longer available to teams – at least, for the time being. The veteran defender, and soon-to-be free agent, was given permission to talk to other teams during the summer but Carolina is going all-in this season, and that includes Pesce’s help.

Above all else, this decision provides clarity to the Hurricanes’ back end. The team is full of defensive talent, with their depth including Caleb Jones, Jalen Chatfield, Domenick Fensore, Dylan Coghlan, and recent PTO-signee Nathan Beaulieu. That’s a lot of competition for six blue-line spots that already seem occupied. And the list doesn’t even include top prospect Alexander Nikishin, who’s started the KHL season with SKA St. Petersburg rather than attending training camp.

But despite the potential for a logjam, Carolina remains invested in Pesce. And that’s certainly not a surprise;  Pesce has played over 20 minutes per night since his sophomore season way back in 2016-17. He’s become an integral piece of the team’s top four, serving a responsible, defense-focused role. And though Pesce himself has never been much of a scorer, he did record a career-high 30 points last season, marked by 25 assists.

While Pesce’s contract negotiations haven’t resulted in an extension yet, Friedman didn’t rule it out given Carolina’s renewed investment. The team is projected to enter next summer with a staggering $31.65MM in cap space and 13 free agents to work with. This includes anchors of the Canes top-six in Teuvo Teravainen and Seth Jarvis. Carolina will also be faced with what to do with their defense, with only Dmitry Orlov, Burns, and Jaccob Slavin on contract beyond this year. It’ll be an interesting summer, and extending Pesce early would certainly make it an easier one to navigate. But for Carolina, all sights are set on this season – one they’re hoping ends with some hardware.

Honestly, I don't see a problem with the Canes going into the season with these UFAs.

IMO I think the GMs (and fans) needs to shed the old mentality of "We can't lose a player for nothing so let's sign him to whatever deal".  You're not losing him for nothing, you're gaining cap space.  That cap flexibility can be just as or more valuable than re-signing a player long-term (obviously, that excludes players like McJesus, EP and Crosby).  The Canes have a good core and the cap space from Pesce can easily be replaced with another UFA signing or open opportunity for a trade and sign and rejuvenate that core.

They still get to go all in this season and if it doesn't work out, they get to re-tool with a good core and cap flexibility.

Alright, so the problem goes back to the overwhelming depth on the team.  With the amount of defencemen they have, it makes sense to trade someone for a forward.  Moving Pesce would've disrupted the team too much.

Skjei would indeed be a good option to move.  He's a decent player on a decent contract.

I'm telling you...Canucks have to do a Biden and start sniffing at Pesce if they want to make things happen.

As long as they don't go gropin' around like the orange criminal, we're happy.

Foul.
let’s keep that to the politics forum. Don’t need that pair of crypt keepers messing up every thread.

It's the first thread I messed up, thank you very much.

Besides, the hillbilly started it.

Canucks will never win a cup untill they figure out how to draft and develop their own dmen. Historically brutal at it thus the constant holes  in the lineup and searching for talent. Frustrating.

The Key to drafting and developing our own Dmen is draft picks.

I think as the summer progressed, most folks assumed they would keep Pesce.

They are contending and he is a big part of their team.  Before free agency, if they could have made a move to free up the money and roster spot to use elsewhere in the lineup… that makes sense.

Getting rid of him now that there wouldn’t likely be any upgrades to their team in the short term doesn’t make a lot of sense for Cup aspirations.  Even losing him for nothing after the season is acceptable for wheee they are as a club.

Weren't you saying it makes more sense to move Skjei @aGENT?

If they want to get over the hump and win another cup keeping Pesce makes sense. They have a lot of flex with Orlov being on a two year deal.

Yup. Sure they added Orlov and DeAngelo...but those guys lean (DeAngelo especially) toward offense over defense. You move Pesce, and after Slavin, you don't really have any top 4 guys that you can rely on for defense first. Skej can (already has?) be replaced by Orlov.

Slavin, Burns

Orlov, Pesce

Jones, CHatfield/DeAngelo

...is still a damn good two way D. You take Pesce out though....and things don't look so pretty (defensively anyway). I'm sure they were playing a bit of a game of chicken with his agent and trying to use a trade this summer as extension leverage, to try to hammer out favourable terms. But at this point, they're far better going all in this year WITH him, and roll the dice on extending him later/next summer.

Agreed - especially top 4D.

The group at Young Stars looked better than previous years. I could see McWard or Hirose having 4/5D ceilings.

I’ve been discouraged to see analysts suggest D-Petey projects as 3rd pair. But if hes physical, and a beast on the PK, that would still be highly valuable.

So you're saying poke at Skjei instead, got it
