What would you do with Huberdeau ?

Recommended Posts

This is looking like the worst ever.

I wonder what the worst ever as a percent of the cap actually is. And that is saying something in this league.

So what would you do ? Let him play and hope for an injury ? It is only a matter of if, not when he gets bought out. Is there any way a Horton for Clarkson type deal could be made ?

Or maybe a mega trade and buyout. A non cap team could trade for him and demand a ransom from Calgary to do it.

Id play him for 2 more years and then buy him out

He must be playing for a retirement buyout plan and then hope to resign and start playing somewhere else (which is sleazy)

Maybe when you are bought out on these deals you shouldn't be able to play again

(We were paying Lou to take less in Florida working for a team competing against us, while being paid by us which is wrong imo)

If Calgary misses the playoffs, and it looks like they will, then it will be rebuild time. Tanev, Lindholm and Hanifin won't be there, either through trades or simple walkaway. Calgary has very little in the way of blue chip prospects, so they'll be looking for better prospects and draft picks. I don't think they could find a buyer for Huberdeau, so they'll either have to put up with him until it makes more sense to flush him and take the L. He will cost $10.5M per for the next seven years. Kadri reached his peak in the Stanley Cup year in Colorado and hasn't done much as a Flame. His first year total of 56 points was 31 fewer than his final year in Colorado and this year he's on pace for about 58 points. All this for $7M per for the next five years.  As long as Huberdeau and Kadri are using up $17.5M of the cap, for disappointing returns from aging guys, Calgary isn't going anywhere.

Calgary is hooped.

Yeah, do a rebuild and  force those 2 to play through it

They did the Flames no favours

That's an ugly buyout.  100x worse than the OEL buyout.  There is literally almost zero cap relief for the entire 7 years remaining in his contract.  His contract is basically buyout proof.  I think they either have to play him out through a rebuild or hope he gets an early retirement to Robidas Island...

They really need to sell everything around those 2 and see if some cap flexibility can shake something out for either of them.
Rebuild time.

It really will help them remain around the cap floor while they sell off everything if that's what they choose to do.

What a disaster.  It's fascinating though, like a car wreck you just can't look away.

Imo this makes Brad Treliving a worse GM than Benning. This is the calibre of bad deals that worse GMs ever are made of. Not Louis Erricson level

It looked like a good move under the circumstances but that contract  woof!

At the time i thought it was wrong bc they were getting older with the trade. And not getting younger. Tkachuk is 26.

Big top line players also have a history of falling off. Medium to smaller guys don't fall off as hard as they age

Right. Getting JH and Weegar, didn't seem so bad at the time, considering Tkapuke forced their hand. But WOW! What a bonehead signing.

Sure, he came off a 115 point season, but still. Calgary was desperate, and now they're really gonna pay for it.

Signing Kadri is a joke. I had a heated debate with someone in a pub about him being a piece of spunk. The other guy thought he was a superstar???

Yeah, right.

Anyway, screw the Flamers!

Not sure there is a good solution.
‘Hope he develops a mysterious allergy to hockey equipment is about best they got.

The Flames aren't one of the NHL's favoured franchises so, unfortunately, probably won't be an option.

Calgary is hooped.

It's basically a buyout proof contract.

You'd think that Treliving would have pumped the brakes on the buyout proofing during negotiations. But nope, he was too clueless for that.

Any 30+ or max contract should be as buyout friendly as possible.

What is the point of buyout proofing anyway ? Taxes ? Bc it prevents players from double dipping. He's going to live the rest of his career in abject shame.

Calgary would have been better off even getting next to nothing in return and having that cap space  from Tak leaving than taking Hub in trade

Signing Kadri and him on retirement contracts just crippled the team       I hated when Canucks would sign those retirement UFA'S looking for highest bidder

Good point. They could have taken a first and 2nd of the next 2 years from FLA at least. And just kept their options open with cap space.

But again, the most indefensible thing of the whole trade and contract was the buyout proofing. Erasing the last and only line of defense you have. Amazing how stupid that man is.
