[Waivers] Jack Campbell

Wild. Pretty sure he's been a bit better than Skinner, but his age is maybe the difference maker for them. Who's their other backup?

They've got Calvin Pickard and a fairly promising youngster in Olivier Rodrigue down in Bakersfield but I'm not sure what they can do with their cap situation. They've been playing a skater short because of it so I'm not sure what kind of moves they can make here.

Well, they just created a tiny bit of cap room by burying Soup's contract.  And they can use that space to solve one of three glaring issues: depth scoring, defense, and goaltending.  Edmonton has had these problems for the last... decade.

I'd say call up Rodrigue and pray he turns into rookie Binnington.  That would be my plan A, and it's not a good plan at all.

They can blame their bad goalies as much as they want but when you've got 2 bad goalies with similar stats, chances are your team defensive play is a big problem too and that'll never change.

Look at us - we sucked defensively under Bruce, basically keep the same goalies and clean out our coaching staff to become more defensive, now our goaltender and defensive stats go through the roof.

They can put whoever they want in between the pipes, they're going to get shelled. I know they give up some bad rebounds and goals but I'd say at least half of them are purely bad defending.

Campbell is a serviceable goalie who has been hung out to dry. Overpaid by a desperate team. Can't blame Campbell for taking the money at this point in his career. He is now set for life but may see his career in limbo for awhile. Really, just another player ruined by this crap franchise.

It could be worse I guess...

Will a team claim Soupy? San Jose? Bueller? Anyone?

Doubt it, will just assign him and bring up a netminder from the AHL. A shake up for sure, but just don't see teams taking on Campbell when we hear teams won't trade for Canucks because they have one or two years of cap attached, who is going to want Campbell at 4 more years of cap.

Skinner: Let’s in 6 goals

Oilers: F you Campbell!

The Edmonton Oilers placed goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers Tuesday.

Campbell, 31, also has a 1-4-0 record this season with a .873 save percentage and a 4.50 goals-against average.

He did not play in the team's 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Monday, though Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft addressed criticism directed at both the netminders post-game

“Our goaltenders wear the same jerseys as the rest of the team,” Woodcroft said. “Are there moments that our goaltenders can be better? Yeah, there are.”

Campbell is in the second season of a five-year, $25 million contract signed with the Oilers in 2022.

Fellow goaltender Stuart Skinner has not fared better  this season, owning a 1-4-1 record with a .856 save percentage and a 3.99 goals-against average.

The Oilers sit second-last in the NHL this season with a 2-8-1 record. Only the San Jose Sharks, who the Oilers will face Thursday, have fewer points this season.

More details to follow.

This is an even bigger circus than what the Canucks had last season.

Not with that contract. I suspect this is a move made to get Campbell some steady playing time, maybe get his confidence back. Just run with Skinner in the meantime. Not a bad plan for a desperate club?
