How the Vegas Golden Knights are ready to circumvent the cap again (and why the Canucks can’t do the same)

Great news, Vancouver fans!

The Canucks’ strongest Pacific Division rival, the Vegas Golden Knights, just had to place their top centre, Jack Eichel, on long-term injured reserve.

And with the Golden Knights already a full ten points behind the Canucks in the Pacific race, one has to think this greatly increases the odds of the Canucks taking the divisional crown and securing home-ice advantage in the playoffs.

At the very least, there’s no way that this is actually somehow good news for the Golden Knights, and something that could greatly disadvantage the Canucks, right? That wouldn’t make any sense.

There’s just no way that a rival losing their top centre for potentially the final two months of the season is something the Canucks should be worried about.
Right? Right?!

Wrong. Welcome to the zany world of the NHL salary cap and LTIR relief space, in which mile-wide loopholes exist and the league seems hesitant to close them – almost certainly because said loopholes seem to exclusively benefit the big-spending franchises, like Vegas.

Hey, we are almost that smart, Soucy is "down for the count" till playoffs. But I dont know why they didnt go there with Mik. I guess if his surgeries needed extra healing time we would have been investigated?

I feel like the Canucks were pioneers of this method of circumvention.  Back in 2011 they had so many injuries that all seemed to happen just as other players were coming back from injury.

Fuck this bush league league. If I didn't love the Canucks so much I wouldn't pay any attention to the NHL at all. Corruption and incompetence from the top down.

Still employs Colin Campbell despite written proof of him pressuring officials to rig games in favour of his son.

You are correct.

The Vancouver Canucks invented this with Sami Salo leading into the trade deadline.

Well Gillis tried to circumvent the cap with the Luongo contract.  Just New Jersey with the Kovalchuk contract.  League ****'d us with a dead cap hit.  League *LESSENED* the original penalty imposed on New Jersey....because "reasons"   🤨

Solution. New CBA players get paid in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Cap mandatory compliance once the season starts until the end of the Stanley Cup finals.

Teams can't use the playoffs as an excuse to get around the cap. NHL and owners will hate it. Players will love it. Teams will have to get compliant and STAY compliant.

You basically have the offseason and the end of the preseason to get your cap in order.

Or as simple as the starting lineup must be cap compliant.  The intention of the LTIR is to be able to replace an injured player, so if VGK trades for Guentzel to replace Stone, and Stone comes back for the playoffs, they should need to decide how to allocate that cap.  Stone or Guentzel?  Not BOTH, which is just ridiculous the way it is right now.

Well the excuse has been once the playoffs start the players aren't getting paid, so there's no salaries to be compliant to.

It's a weak ass excuse. But it's still there.

That's a terrible excuse.  The intention of the salary cap was for the sake of parity across the league.  Take that away and you get teams like VGK or TBL with cumulative cap hits of $100m for the playoffs.  We all can see it so clearly, yet the NHL turns a blind eye.
