[Re-signing] TOR extends William Nylander 8 years, $11.5M AAV (full NMC)

Recommended Posts

Edit: runour confirmed, deal is done - full NMC

60% of the salary cap for 5 players.  That percentage will change as the cap goes up, Tavares' contract ends and Marner gets extended.  But they couldn't let a guy like Nylander walk free.  He is the main reason Toronto's in a playoff position right now.  Better to just bite the bullet and pay the man.

Looking like if that's the deal Toronto signs Nylander to, we're probably exceeding that with Petey who plays a far more important role on the team as a centreman. I think the number will be higher than 11.5M now, especially if the Nylander deal is accurate. Might even be closer to the 12M number, over 8 years. If he wants that high of a salary, then he's going to have to sign longer ish term.

:classic_laugh: Can someone remind again me how many cups that group has won again with these high price players? Too Funny!:picard:

Its not their fault, it's in their DNA. Not many people know this but the leafs have never been past the 3rd round.... EVER!!!!

Toronto is so bad at giving in to its players and resetting the salary norm across the NHL.
Nylander is really taking them to town, because he can, as a UFA at end of season. They have no choice but to given in or he leaves for nothing. 8 years at $11+m? Trying to match his jersey number #88?
Petey as an RFA should get around the same. But I hope he realizes he’s the third best player on this team most nights, behind Hughes and Miller, who have both left more money on the table to help build a winner.

My thoughts exactly, the way they are paying their players, they should have 4 franchise players and counting. You can't make this stuff up! Too funny! :classic_laugh:

I wonder where Vegas would be if they were handing out contracts like that. :classic_biggrin:

It would be nice to get Petey on that AAV for a max deal.  It will probably come in at that for a 4 Year deal though.

Then he still gets to put the screws to a team for a max term deal when he is still 29 and extend his career earnings.

it's probably what management doesn't want to happen. if they can lock up a player of his calibre long term, that's probably preferrable on their end. Petey and his agent, though, different story.

This deal pretty much signifies that the Leafs will move on from Tavares when his deal is up.

To be fair Nylander's been playing at a discount contract for 2-3 years now. 40 goal scorer, ppg+ at 6.9mil.

And that is their best shot at a cup.  The window will slam shut once Nylander is at 11.5, Matthews at 13.25, Tavares at 11, Marner at 10.9.  In other words, next season they will enter the equivalent time frame of when Toews and Kane got their post-Cup contracts.  Chicago was never the same again, and nor will Toronto.
