Arshdeep Bains | #80 | LW

His effort level is awesome. Played really hard last night.

Still needs to improve his footspeed/skating (if he can), and in generally getting more comfortable at the pro level plus gaining strength will be a big asset to a player like him.

Overall though, super pleased and I think he could really take a shot at making the bottom 6 next season.

Agree. He’s not the fastest guy and never will be but there is something to be said for a guy who never stops skating. Like a Hansen or burrows. Just non stop motor energy. He is definitely made for a bottom 6 role and he will be an NHL player for us.

Arshdeep Bains is beginning to separate himself as the Vancouver Canucks’ top call-up option

Currently sitting tied for second in AHL scoring, local kid, Arshdeep Bains is beginning to look like the number-one call-up option for the Vancouver Canucks when they inevitably need to look down to the farm later on in the season.

At just 22 years old, Bains seems to be figuring it all out.

With blue and green in his blood from a young age, Bains has been creating a ton of offence since the beginning of the 2023-24 AHL season and a lot of his confidence this year had to have come from his long run with the Vancouver Canucks in the preseason as well as his spot with NHL linemates throughout training camp in Victoria.

When you watch the AHL, you see certain skills stick out — whether that be shooting, skating, physicality, playmaking or other notable assets in a hockey player’s game. Being ready to come out of the AHL and make the NHL jump typically comes when a player has mastered two, three or more of those impactful skills.

Right now, Bains’ biggest two strengths are his playmaking and his hockey IQ.

Every single one of Bains’ coaches that we’ve talked to has raved about his awareness on the ice and how it translates to being ahead of the play in both the offensive and defensive ends of the ice. Bains takes his hockey IQ onto the penalty kill and is one of Abbotsford’s most trusted penalty killers. He put a bow on that title last year in the AHL playoffs when he scored two shorthanded goals during one penalty kill.

If you watch these last two clips, something you can also pretty easily see is the improvement in his skating.

Abbotsford General Manager Ryan Johnson challenged Bains to work on his lower-body strength and it has shown well for Bains, who currently has two goals and seven assists through six AHL games.

Here’s another example of his improved speed this season, and this one led to his first goal of the year.

Another part of being a call-up option is being somewhat of a Swiss army knife.

Bains is currently being used on Abbotsford’s first power play unit and we mentioned him being one of the most-trusted penalty killers on the team.

So far, we’ve talked about improved skating, good special teams play, great playmaking, and high-end hockey IQ.

So what’s holding him back from being in the NHL…?

Bains is just another example of how this new management encourages their scouts (at the pro and amateur levels) to express their ideas. We are both signing (like Bains) and drafting future NHLers. Bains is friggin’ good and accepts what his role will be in the NHL. He will be on the big club soon.

I'd like to see Bains called up and play on either the 3rd or the 4th line.  At this point, Beauvillier is a waste of a roster spot and I'd like to see some Abby guys get rotated in.

Obviously, Podkolzin would have been my first choice, but Bains would be my second choice...

I think Bains will have an impact on the bottom six. He advances the puck in almost every situation he's forced to give it up. Always seems to have a contingency plan. Smart.

I think Bains will be very successful in the NHL. If you look at his progression year over year, he's been making huge steps and rounding out his game since before we signed him. He fills the stat sheet but is also so detail oriented and defensively sound. He's such a smart player, and now it looks like his body has caught up to his brain. Wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a Burrows type player for us down the road.

Burrows was in the ECHL at 22.  Bains will be 23 in February.  At 23, Burrows put up 26 points in 72 games in the AHL.  Bains is way ahead of that pace right now.  Burrows then was in the NHL at 24, bouncing from the AHL.  Burrows wasn't full time in the NHL until 25.

Bains with his progression should be an NHL regular at 24 at the latest.  But should be bouncing up and down next year, and hopefully getting a call up this season...
