Integra250 Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 (edited) https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/nolan-patrick-officially-retires-from-hockey-at-age-25 Unfortunately his short career was riddled with injuries. I know most, if not everyone here would've wanted the Canucks to draft him if he was available. I feel bad for him but lucky we have Pettersson. Edited December 21, 2023 by Integra250 1 1 1 Quote
Barn Burner Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 That's horrible news. Wish him the best. Quote
HKSR Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Holy crap, that's actually really terrible. He had a lot of talent, but sucks that injuries did him in. Quote
Pears Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Pretty sad to hear, but glad he made the decision to retire now and not risk any further damage. Quote

Jess Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 For some reason, I thought this was already known, but maybe he's just making it official now. Pretty sad. I'm sure the Devils are glad then went with the less popular choice of Hischier. 1 Quote
Fanuck Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 25yo, 4 or 5 years living the dream, several million dollars in the bank, I know his dream is over now and that's sad, but If he's healthy he's got his whole life ahead of him and many, many opportunities to pursue. Quote
King Heffy Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 (edited) Hopefully he invested the money that he did make wisely. Sad to see it happen but a stark reminder for young players that there are no guarantees of income for the future. Edited December 20, 2023 by King Heffy 1 1 Quote
Satchmo Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 I have no idea what the guy is doing but there's this: Reports that Nolan Patrick retired from pro hockey are WRONG https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/nolan-patrick-retires-nhl-25-years-old Quote

Even if they have money, the consequences of an injury career can be devastating to the person. Feelings of failure are likely commonplace. Add in the prospect of drugs (to cure an injury), a few million dollars is not really that much nowadays. (I highly doubt he even has 3 million, given the short career that he had). He is likely just a regular guy at this point with a better known name. 1 Quote

gwarrior Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Man, that sucks. I always hate to see or hear that someone has to retire because of injuries. Way better when they can retire on their own terms. But, it is what it is. I don't know what else to say. Quote

Let's be real, he's not E.Kane. Quote

Let's be real, he's not E.Kane. $13MM may be his gross earnings, but from that he pays agents fees, income taxes, personal trainers etc. Still would earn a reasonable amount but would need to invest wisely if he wants it to last for decades. 1 2 Quote

Yup. All of those things, plus escrow too easily take 60% off the top....which leaves approx. 5 large, but he had to live on his earnings while he played too...so even if that was only a couple hun G's per year, that'd take close to another 2M off of his career gross earnings....he may have socked away a couple of mill (or more, maybe even less), if so hopefully he had good investment advice and took it, otherwise that money wouldn't last long and he'll end up in the work pool like the rest of us, until he dies haha Quote
Gurn Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 He has played 222 regular season games and 6 in the play offs. Iirc that qualifies him for an NHL pension. 1 Quote
Gurn Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 A bit of looking around and I see that the pension is based on how many games you were on the roster-so injury time seems to count towards the pension. This site https://gavingroup.ca/pension-calculator/ provides a calculator and, as an example, it shows Patrick would get $72,875 per year-after he turns 62---- based on 222 games. however, if the injury time does count Nolan has played in 4 seasons. So about 328 games(4x82) which would bump the pension to $106,000 per year, at age 62 He last played in 2021-22 Quote

Plus the lifestyle these guys often live ... it really depends on how much he put away ... 3 million untouched with a house, if he doesn't want to work again, he won't have to. 1 Quote

I am assuming NHL players are insured heavily against long term disability. An assumption on my part. Particularly true in Patrick's case as his injury problems began in junior. Quote

As much as people might think the power/leverage has swung too far towards the players, it wasn't always that way. One can argue *one* of the best defensemen of all time, Doug Harvey, ended up at one point homeless & sleeping in an abandoned railway car (he battled inner demons as well). He had joined Gordie Howe's attempt to unionize (where like Howe, ended up banished to the Rangers as "punishment"). 1 Quote

Players were for sure getting boned. 1 1 Quote
